Just take a moment to think about that one, fellas. Just 117 years ago, man had never tasted powered, controlled, and sustained flight. Now we have hypersonic flight, thrust vectoring, and jets that have so much thrust and control that they can accelerate while going straight vertically. The shear amount of aviation technology advancement in the last 100 years might be the most significant and rapid advancement of a technology in human history.

And it was all made possible by the efforts of dedicated men.

The book Chasing the Demon, which is about breaking the sound barrier, discusses the history of powered flight. Interestingly,

Orville and Wilbur were standing on the shoulders of giants- men who'd been working on this seriously since at least 1799 when George Cayley broke the process of flight apart into the distinct components of lift, weight, thrust, and drag. By the mid 19th century gliders could carry a person. [ I was going to list scientists and engineers here who'd contributed during the 19th century but deleted it for brevity ]

Humans had uncontrolled powered flight working. The problem that remained was controlling it once airborne which was the last piece of the puzzle, that the Wright Brothers solved with their "wing warping" concept.

I bet the NYT printed this because just a month or two prior to this, Samuel Langley crashed an airplane he'd built, that Army Ordinance had paid for, in the Potomac River after it'd flown 35 feet, in a highly-publicized failure. (Again control issues). So the "it'll never work" crowd was out in full force.
