A family member of mine went through this a few years back. They were in the middle of a remodel when a squatter just broke in one night, swapped the locks and told the police she'd been living there for months. The police wouldn't even let the contractors back inside to get their tools. (which she of course pawned). It took months to get the bitch out. In the end we had to pay a sherrif's deputy to stand and watch while a crew of movers packed the woman's shit out to the driveway. She screamed the whole time and threw a tantrum because they wouldn't load them on a truck for her.
Even now it was the most blatant example of entitlement I've ever seen first hand.
The home was completely wrecked. She'd turned the water on without contacting the water company. They were tipped off and came by and disconncted it. So she just started shitting in a bucket and dumping it in a hole she cut in the floor of the spare bedroom until that was full then moved to other rooms.
The electricity was on in my family member's name and the judge warned them that they couldn't turn it off. Of course squatter bitch was supposed to switch it into her name but didn't. She ran up a huge bill of course. She was running the heat with fucking windows open just to make it worse.
She sold the appliances, took hammers to the wall, ripped out the wiring and filled the crawl space under the floors with her own feces etc. Then had the gall to call the health dept on her way out of town just to make it worse.
The place had to be almost completely gutted. The bitch did many tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage, and got a gold plated diamond encrusted pussy pass.
It seems that's just how she lives, she's been doing this for years and the courts let her get away with it. No telling how many people she's driven to the brink of financial ruin.
Here's a pro tip. If a squatter ever moves into a property you own, don't report it in those terms. Make sure you stress that someone has broken in and is inside right now. Never use the words "moved in" or "squatter". Call them a theif, / home invader etc. You MIGHT have a chance the police will do something.

-- Sadly this \ is the "law of the land" in most states.
-- She doesn't need a "lease" to claim that YOUR place is her "domicile/residence" -- all she has to have done is made it her "official" address "on the record" in some manner (i.e. given the USPS a "change of address" form in the past and be getting mail at it, have her driver's license registered to it, etc), and the police will check/accept that by default.
-- This is where many (most) guys make a HUGE mistake -- they fallaciously believe that by NOT having a written "rental/lease" agreement that no "rules/laws/notice" is required and that they can kicker her out anytime they want -- THAT simply isn't true; in the ABSENCE of a written agreement, everything defaults to whatever "rules" the STATE decides to apply (which at a minimum becomes the 30 day/calendar month "eviction" -- and MAY very well be longer, as {again in the ABSENCE of a written lease agreement that states otherwise} there are DEFAULT restrictions & requirements placed on such "eviction" notices, such as they have to be written, dated, signed, some record of delivery date via "official" method, etc).
It is in fact MUCH better to have a written & signed "rental/lease/sublease agreement" (ideally one that has been reviewed/checked by a lawyer) that delineates the terms, conditions that violate or "break" the lease, which invoke (or optionally CAN invoke) an eviction, and which (at least in some states, YMMV) CAN override certain "default" statutory things, etc.
