There are many things that shouldn't be disclosed but with enough skill you can still get the information (This skill is called Social Engineering, there's even a subreddit about it : /r/SocialEngineering )
What probably happened: he gave the name and room number, asking if this was correct like if he wouldn't want to call the wrong room, since he already seemed to possess all the info the hotel simply confirmed.
"I would like to call Mr Chad in room 1234. It's room 1234, am I correct?"
To me the story seems legit. People are often busted cheating because of small details like the suit case here.
