A good college doesn't teach you programming, it teaches you how to solve problems at the abstract level, programming is just a tool. I've seen one programmer write a program that took three weeks to process a data set. Then another person stepped in and optimised it to take about one hour for the same data set. Both can code, but one was better at thinking about the problem and found a better algorithm

The tip is you need to learn how to solve problems and learn how to think abstractly, then the rest becomes much easier

If you want to become a code monkey, know that Shandi Sabramaski from Delhi is ten times cheaper at that then you are. What you CAN do, and what people tend to forget is most relevant, is either offer the whole package of:

Taking an inventory of what the customer needs, not what their management says it needs
Designing that software schematically, taking into account every use case. To find those talk to the low level employees that will actually use it. Do not rely on middle management - those tend to be HR types with 0 tech skill.
Building the software and testing it
Maintaining the software/being support for it.

Testing and customer interaction is something that Shandi's are abysmal in. That's why fully outsourced projects so frequently fail or become high maintenance nightmares (dealing with that one in my own job). Forget about pure programming, that's akin to a manufacturing job, those no longer exist. Software engineering, design and support, that's where the jobs are at.

Software developer for 23 years. Interview people all the time. Unfortunately the days of teaching yourself programming and getting an interview are gone. I don't get the resume at all unless it's vetted first by HR.

Best bet is to learn python or Java both are open source and you can find a project and contribute to it. Ie find something in the Apache site and start contributing. That's awesome for a resume.

Next is networking go to the python and Java user groups. Put that in your resume. Active member of..

But in the end you need something to get through the hr filter. Some certificate. It security certificate from Sanford. Something along those lines. That can get you an internship. It's happened at my job.

Unfortunately, the ony way to have HR not throw your resume in the trash immediately, is to have a 4-year degree in something. But most of what you actually use in yonr work will be self taught.

Well I graduated in computer science couple of years ago and Was not placed immediately to a job. So I picked up python and aws skills in 6 months. I got a job through my friend's reference in a startup. After a switch next year I am in one of a fortune 500. Still was not happy with my pay, so j picked up Deep Learning skills and completed Nanodegree in Udacity just last months. Now I am building up my portfolio for landing an AI project with larger pay in my company or will switch for new one.

The reason I told this is I am practically self taught who was ok in college. But as you said curriculum of almost all colleges is outdated. You can learn coding using hacker rank, codewars, code chef etc. If you want machine Learning or AI you can go to kaggle for free or udacity for paid but industry ready course.

What were your other majors in? Are you good at maths? It's possible to teach it to yourself but it is incredibly dull and monotonous. As well as fairly anti social. You need to have a passion for it.

Try it and see how far you get, back end might not be for you but front end might be better. Either way, if you want to make a living, you have to be hot shit, there is a load of competition and the decent bucks require the best of the best.

Just get started. There’s so many different languages, frameworks etc. Just start. I have no college education and I’m a software developer, self taught... do it everyday, everyday!, and start building things, make a portfolio, you’ll get a job pretty easily.

Bear in mind you might hate it. I really love it, but I’m a very introverted person and enjoy spending hours at a time locked away in my flat writing code.. I’m not saying extroverts don’t make good programmers, but either way you’re going to have to enjoy it.... you’ll need to spend a lot of time programming, a LOT of time.

You don’t particularly need a college degree, but it is probably the easier route, otherwise you’ll have to be very self-motivated. Interestingly, the best programmers I know were maths majors.

I'd check the stack overflow.com annual survey of popular languages for a direction of what to learn about.
