The Germans did a lot right.
Had one of the strongest economies the world will ever see, with lowest unemployment and highest satisfaction of its citizens.
We will never see it again but saving ones country from destruction is a beautiful thing.

Respect for the soldier, he put his own life at stake for helping the kid. He did the right thing, though he would have been killed on the spot, had his superior seen this photo, or he was killed for it and we don't know. Commies hated disobedience and dealt with it immediately.

I wonder how they got this photo. Wasn't this what would get you killed in that age ?
[–]Ukhupa5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Probably a sympathetic photographer.
Or, and it's sad to think about it, some regime-loving backstabber who immediately alerted his superiors and both the soldier and the kid were killed on the spot.

I've always thought that many (most?) soldiers, regardless of allegiance, were nothing like the misguided, corrupt and power hungry generals and politicians they risked their lives for. Especially the younger they were.
Sure, rotten apples have also always existed but to control the rest, these totalitarian regimes relied on propaganda machines and death for all deserters.

The East German soldier is like: And remember son, stay away from E-girls. They patrol this city, day and night. I can get you off this once but come next time, you might not be so lucky.
