Bukowski is my favorite writer and he definitely understood living with ugly women and drunks. First wife was a freak with missing vertebrae in her neck; he married her because no one else would. The big love of his life was some older, drunk woman who was divorced with kids. Jane Cooney. He later beta buxxxed a younger hot chick as an old man, but he really was in the pits with some ugly ass, loser women in his youth. So he knows his shit.

Love me some Bukowski and even in his weakest moments crying over some woman, he still had some other chicks on the side. He grew up ugly with no women wanting him and was completely cold when the world came to him as he got famous in his later years. Plus, the drinking. Always nice to see people drink like that and still stay famous / make a living.

My favorite poem is "Young in New Orleans", favorite novel tie with "Post Office" and "Factotum". Should be mandatory reading for young men.

As an older guy I can tell you that solitude is the labor pain of creativity that will give birth to new life. I love Bukowski. Alcohol was his writing friend but not his life friend.

I love Bukowski, he truly was a real man who understood the world, and the depravity of it. I was always a fan of his novels, namely Post Office and Factotum which are both good reads if you're interested and need a place to start - but Love is a Dog from Hell is great poetry about the nature of women and love. It's eye opening, real and depressing as hell.
