He referred to himself on more than one occasion as "being of Roman stock".
However, the first four days of his life I believe he was nationally Genoan and from then on he grew up under French rule. Gotta love technicalities.
But yeah he was Italian. Although later in life he saw himself as French. He was a product of the French Revolution and spent his adult life in the French army and French culture.
