There already is an insurance plan. Sort of.

It's called bankruptcy. While alimony, child support, and some other things can't be discharged in bankruptcy, you can often use the bankruptcy court to help wane through the shit storm to help get your life back on track.

Yeah, it'll ruin your credit for a while and you're the court's bitch until it's discharged, but you already fucked your life up by getting married in the first place.

Bean counters won't go near divorce insurance, not because it's more than 100% likely but because it's a fate worse than death yet still the BEST possible outcome of long term association with a female because the others cost even more.

You have a very good point but I think it can be done. The company would probably have to charge a very high premium and payout low but still. Insurance is great because of the mathematical analysis of life, car,...etc. however, I'm not sure how you could statistically come up with rates. I am thinking age would be one. A preexisting condition for divorce insurance could be a former divorce...haha

All insurance is a form of gambling. In auto insurance you are betting you will get in an accident, and the insurance company is betting you won't. Thats why if you are a shitty driver, your rates are so much more. Now while I dont know the exact numbers, the last time I looked, the divorce rate in the western world is above 60%. No company, no matter how much of a premium you pony up, is going to touch that. So to quote Wargames, "Interesting game, seems the only way to win is to not play."

insurance typically only has a sustainable market where events have a very low probability of covered events. it's why your car insurance rarely covers little shit like door dings and bumper scrapes... they're lowering the probability of covered events by excluding the frequent events. then they can lower premiums such that it's affordable, while people are covered, and the actuarial tables show the levels to keep it sustainable.

divorce insurance technically exists because insurance companies will underwrite practically anything. but to make the math work, they have to exclude almost everything, to the point of uselessness. there is no door ding equivalent in divorce that's easy to exclude. divorce impact is always all or none. anyone with even basic understanding of finance views divorce as a financial option held by a woman on a man's prior wealth and future income.
