Was this the message/interpretation for a particular piece of literature, or was this just stated out of the blue? I'm trying to think of works with this as a message. Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" has the importance of relationships over material pursuit, but it's general human interaction rather than romantic interests. Hawthorne's version of King Midas is similar, though that does have greed for gold causing the king to turn his daughter to gold.
