my father passed away at a young age, and I remember he used to hand me wads of cash and say ' dont tell your mother'.

When I was in 7th grade, my dad caught me beatin off. He never came upstairs for years then one day he just busts in on me laughing and walking away. I sat there for two hours wondering what the hell I was gonna say to him. I finally walked downstairs and asked him if he knew where the bug bite itch reliever was. He pulled me aside and told me its normal and there is nothing to be ashamed of. He was and is still cool as fuck. I got arrested at 15 and the next morning aftering bailing me out, he was waking me up for breakfast nice as can be. He told me one day we would look back and laugh at all this.

My father was an orphan at the start of the Great Depression. He was a WWII veteran. He was cold and reserved towards me. He never got angry or was violent. He never attended any of my baseball games or school activities. He taught me to shoot and as a teen I was familar shooting many WWII guns. He taught me to work on cars or I should say he pointed to the car and told me to fix it. So as a teen I taught myself to work on the cars. I rebuilt a number of 1960's and 1970's British sports cars, both engines and the bodies. Haynes Manuals for those cars became my bibles. I came to realized he loved me in his own way and did his best. He passed away a decade ago and still almost every night he is in my dreams.

That's awesome, sounds like a great father. When I was young my father would pick me up from school unannounced and go to the beach with our dog. We'd go camping, star gaze and explore new places just for the hell of it. He would teach me discipline an have me feed the chickens and other choirs in return for a small allowance. He passed away when I was young.

Can't say my father was anything like what anyone here experienced.

He kinda taught me to fish, but quickly began to leave me behind so he could drink while fishing.

He brought me to some football games(amateur), but began to leave me behind so he could drink.

He never taught me to fix anything, never taught me anything academic, never helped with anything and more or less left me on my own.

When I was interested in women and found with a porn mag, he beat me instead of talked to me about it vs my brother which he went into a room with to have a full talk about when they dropped a condom over the Washington monument. At least I remember watching something like that on TV a long time ago.

Never let me touch his hand tools. One time in elementary school I had ear pain and possible ear infection, instead of being caring he berated me stating "you better not be faking it or you'll get it later", I want faking it.

When I sliced my eye, my mom brought me to the hospital and my father didnt care much at all for my injury.

So I kinda envy you guys with the connection you have with your fathers.

Edit: this is also after he had his head partially bashed in with a car wheel(minus the tire) after beating my mother.

My dad is amazing. When anyone asks me who my hero is, i will always say that its my dad. Going to baseball games, talking about his business trips, shooting guns, and mowing and cleaning up the lawn are some of my favorite things that I can remember doing with him. I really do love him.
