I've played lots of different sports-- football, tennis, golf, badminton, lacrosse, petanque. One of the sports that I've found it easiest to get pretty damn good at in the shortest time possible is pool. I highly recommend picking up the game. Buy a few books on technique or read stuff on line. Then get out there and play. It's really a great feeling to hold a table in a bar all night. I have warm memories of the time a Japanese rugby team came into my bar after their game. I played one of their guys while the team watched. I broke and then proceeded to clear the table, won the game. He never had a chance to even take a shot. memories like that still give me warm fuzzy YES feelings long after they have passed. I've found that putting my pool game together has given me lots of self esteem, and also helped me socialize and meet people. And, to repeat, the advantage I see is that there really just a few basics to master to get better than most people out playing. Although I will say if you get into competitive pool leagues, prepare to be humbled. I am still a step below that, just a happy amateur having fun. Check it out. We all need something to fill the hours on weekends.
