Two reasons:
1) Money. Reddit is one of the most browsed websites in the world AND is frequently used for propaganda. The visits alone are enough to net BILLIONS in advertising revenue and if you think Reddit has few ads, think again - many posts are thinly disguised marketing campaign.
However, Reddit's true power is reach - specifically, reaching a younger population that cannot be targeted by newspapers, radio or TV as they don't really use some mediums anymore. Many of them have ad blockers for Facebook or have given up on it. Sure, they might have Netflix (which is also value in the billions btw), but Reddit allows users to interact, which is a whole new level and way to reach and interact with your audiences.
For instance, say Reddit wants to promote vaccines. Reddit fucking loves vaccines for some reason. I mean, I don't necessarily hate them, but I certainly don't spend every day thinking about how awesome they are and how people who are skeptic about some of the less useful vaccines (HPV, flu, meningitis, etc) are idiots. Reddit does. By perpetually bringing such issues to light, even when it's completely irrelevant (for instance, using a "haha look at this dumb antivaxer who refused to administer a useless vaccine haha" on Facebook), Reddit is able to shape opinions, especially given its younger audiences, and punish those that disagree with the views they are trying to promote. B
It's a complicated form of brainwashing because posters are given the illustion than their voice matter. It doesn't.
Sure, you might think you are commenting and sharing your opinion, but if your opinion is against what Reddit wants to promote (which changes all the time by the way - it was very funny watching politics go from extreme anti-Hillary to extreme pro-Hillary after she stole the nomination), it will be downvoted, and you will be put on a 10 minutes timer. Some subs ban you just for participating in subs they deem "inappropriate."
This gives you an incentive to directly post ONLY what reddit deems "acceptable." In fact, just one day ago, Reddit announced it is done just using carrots to reward good behavior (upvotes, awards, popularity, etc) and will now bring out the stick if you post too many things that it deems unacceptable
By giving you that option, Reddit is giving you the impression that you have freedom of thoughts and expression, but slowly programs you to think and talk in a certain manner. If you don't, you lose those "privileges." You can no longer write that transgender are mentally ill, or that Bernie Sanders is a cuck, because you will be downvoted and, eventually, completely silenced, if not banned.
This is where most of the money is: modifying opinions. It's one thing to be Burger King and convince people to buy a cheeseburger, but another to accept to chop their kid's genitals, or let them attend some drag queen pedo event. Imagine you are, let's say, Bernie Sanders and you want to be elected president. On a free, open platform, Bernie would never have a chance no matter how much cash you throw out because his ideas are retarded as fuck. I have the misfortune of living in a socialist country and let me tell you, it's even worse than what you might think. Tax can easily reach 70% here. I won't bore you with details, but I stopped working because out of the $2,100 I made every week, I had something like $950 after taxes. And then of course I still had to pay property taxes, taxes on gas (you think $4 per gallon is high? LOL), alcohol, driving license, etc.
On a platform like Reddit, however, where you can punish people who disagree with you, retarded ideas like the ones Bernie have do have a chance to survive and spread. Why not? 99% of comments that you will be allowed to read (most upvotes, at the top, etc) will repeat the same BS about how brilliant he is, how smart he is, how people who don't think it could work are nazis, etc.
Today for instance, Bernie proposed a $3T tax on gas/oil companies. It goes without saying this has a 0% chance to ever go through as it would never pass Congress, Senates, then the test of tribunals/courts as it is not only unconstitutional, but completely stupid as well. Imagine you had a simple business that nets you $100,000 per year, of which you paid $25,000 in taxes. Government says all is fine, go ahead, you create jobs, you paid taxes, etc. Then after fifteen years, out of nowhere, the government says you owe it a million bucks; no reason, you just do because that's how it is. They invent some BS about some random regulation and if you don't pay, they send their goons to take your business (exactly what happened in most communist countries). That's what Bernie is trying to do. Do you think an idea like this wouldn't be mocked on an open platform? Of course not. It took me ten lines to explain why it's legit retarded, yet Reddit has written entire novels of comments on how genius it is.
In other words, Reddit allows a form of advertising that cannot be reached anywhere, even on Facebook. Sure, you can post ads on Reddit, but they will be straight up ads that people can easily ignored, or disgussions that will be viewed by a tiny minority - far from people who just browse the home page of Reddit. This is why, when you sort by controversial, you always find comments that speak the truth, are at +200-300 upvotes, yet never seem to make it anywhere, simply because those comments are suppressed.
All this to say, there is a TON of money to be made on Reddit. If Tsla can be valued at $150B while making shitty cars that are $30,000+ more expensive that normal cars and MIGHT allow you to save $10,000 in gas over fifteen years, then Reddit is AT LEAST worth $20-30B and quite possibly more. We'll know for sure when it does an IPO, which it will because the tax treatment of IPO is just too good to pass up, but don't be surprised to see a valuation as high as Uber, in the high 50-60s.
There is a LOT of money and there is no doubt Spez will become a billionaire the moment the company becomes public. This might be enough to explain his behavior. Of course, it might sound ironic that a communist promotes a "everyone should be poor but me" mentality, but is it really surprising?

2) Power. It's very likely the man is on a huge power trip and thinks he is far more important than he really is. His platform was used like crazy to manipulate the 2016 elections; he is even on record saying he could have decided the results of the elections if he chose to. Yes, power makes you stupid and arrogant.
It's possible that Spez was, at one point, just a regular, normal guy. Worked 9 to 5, had his own place and a simple life. Sure, he probably always was left-leaning, but nothing crazy like "hey, let's make sure The Donald can never reach front page" and "let's quarantine it so we can lie later and pretend we gave it a fair chance before deleting it."
Then, one day, he ended up leading a fast-growing website and realizing he could do almost anything he wanted without consequences. Edit comments as he did and pretty much get away with it. Delete entire communities and not face any consequences. Manipulate user bases and even be hailed as a hero. This isn't a result of communism per se, but more like a common symptom of a power trip.
This would explain, overall, why he turned into a "commie cunt." Money, and he is paid off, or power, and he is on a complete power trip, completely disconnected from reality, not far from a complete psychosis, much like Hitler moving around imaginary armies in the last days of the Third Reich. Overall, I would see the seeds were already there, and just from his picture, we can tell he is an incredibly narcissitic individual. I mean, just look at him: he isn't an attractive person by any means, not even remotely close to it, yet always put his ugly face out with that retarded gay smile.
Deep inside, when he is laying in bed at night, Spez already sees himself dining with Elon Musk and advising Tim Cook on the new iPhone. He sees himself as some kind of genius who brought Reddit to what it is today. But the truth is, any retard could do what he does, and probably a lot better without even trying. He's yet another startup kid who thinks he is reinventing the world (see: 99% of silicon valley startups) and usually end up bankrupt and broke until he is bailed by his buddies, except he did end up on the one project that has an actual use for the elite, that is, manipulating the mass (see: Twitter). Why do you think Bezos bought a shitty failing newspaper?
