Independance.

*Mentally speaking.
You are independant, if you allow yourself to de an independant/free thinker. Come to your own conclusions, beleives, lifestyle, and so on; even though they are against conventions.

* Lifestyle speaking
If you don't enslave/tie yourself to a way of live, you're free/independant (to the extend your situation allows it). So if you have no obligations towards wife, children, etc. Then you are free in you are relatively lifestyle choices. (I myself like some obligations, towards charity, but that's all by my choice and because it gives me meaning/purposes)

* Financially speaking
Defense.
Learn to budget! And learn to stick to the budget. Dave Ramsey has good ideas and system about this, imo (minus the tradcon part).
Elliminate all wastes of money (like interest payments, fees, unnesecairy things, etc.)
Attack.
1. Ofcourse max. your income, and also try to look into more streams of income.
2. Try to put money away, and let that money work for you (aka your money earning you more money). For example: dividends, profit shares, stock market increase, rental income from owned properties, etc..

34k a year is enough to live on, and save as well if you don't chase the consumer culture carousel (assuming you don't live in a major metropolitan area or anywhere in California).

If you aren't in debt, you have a good start.

I left active duty after 10 years, joined the guard. I went to college for IT and IT security, half because it interested me, half because it was in demand. My first job made about what you make, factoring in inflation.

The first thing I did was move somewhere I could survive and had a decent job market. College and a lot of self study, certs, made a lab in the basement to practice on. Within a short time I was moving up pretty quickly.

So, pick something you somewhat enjoy, go to school for it, read and practice it, and start networking. You gotta do the legwork.

Check it out fort Hays State University in Kansas, Western governor's University, they both are really inexpensive, pretty good colleges, and have a huge online portfolio. Or done a local community college and start Knocking out pre reqs ... That is if you're thinking of that route.

Take up a trade. I thought the US army paid for college, university, ect.?
