Plenty of imbeciles hurry to college, get a useless degree, and then cry they should have taken more time to think about what they really wanted to do.

Nothing is stopping you from working a few years, accumulate monies and then go to college/trade school when you have a better idea of what you want to do.

I did two undergrad degrees at a state university certified in computer science 15-18 years ago. Took me three years from summer after HS to spring and went through the honors program. I emerged burnt out but had roughly 12k in debt ty grants and scholarships. I never went on for my masters (prob should have) but that’s the way to get the most out of an undergrad degree. Unless you are MENSA brilliant Looking at top 10-15 ivy colleges I think it’s more economical to split the difference, go to a mid range school that will get you a decent education, and make your bones on your post college abilities and accomplishments. I’ve run into a ton of dipshits with 150k debt and business degrees that took 5 years to get... fuck that.

You aren't throwing away a university education. Lots of (smart) people take time off after school to travel, or work, or whatever, before starting university.

Why go there when you're still a child and don't know what you want, or why you're even going. Don't go to university if you have zero idea why you're going there.

So take some time to see the world, and work in the world for a couple years, then you can always decide to do college. But you'll do it much smarter, and for a reason rather than just blindly showing up.

Don’t worry man! I graduated last year with two engineering degrees and 15k in debt. If you know you’re interested in engineering, do it. I save so much money now that I should be able to retire in less than 30 years. (Which isn’t too bad if you ask me). My job is alright and interesting, but my fulfillment comes from the hobbies and traveling I do on the weekends. My job affords me the financial resources to follow my passions. I’d highly recommend a state school if you do decide to go to college. Don’t be like some of my friends who attended private schools and owe six figure debts. Even as an engineer that amount of money is ridiculous to pay back! Good luck with your future. : )

Trade industry is in DESPERATE need of workers. If you get a easy certification in electrical engineering (I think my neighbor has a cv in it? It allows him to work with high voltage shit which pays a ton bc of the hazard), you can make bank and pay for college without loans.

I make 15/hour as a painter with toxic chemicals, plus National Guard on the side. I dabble in college, but my friends who are devoted already owe 50k or so, and work at fucking Starbucks. I'm living like I'm already retired lol, and their hair is falling out.

Its simple - look at someone 5 , 10 or 15yrs down the track of which path you want. If you like what you see then do it.

My personal recommendation is to finish high school and get a easy job like courier and start a business part time. by the time your classmates are out of uni you will already be a millionaire and well established

If you would enjoy doing something without being paid, that's what you should go into. Most men enjoy solving problems. If you enjoy the idea of engineering, you should definitely go to university for it. It's a fairly diverse field and you don't need to be trapped in one kind of profession.

Trades also involve daily problem solving. I wish I had chosen a trade right off and then gone into engineering on my own time.

It is absolutely NOT true that you will ruin your chances of a good education if you don't choose to start it at 18.

If you do choose another path after HS, you can go back to university at 20, 25, 30, or even 40 and still advance or change your career path accordingly. and guess what? by that time, you won't be a teenager pissing away tuition loans on "discovering themselves".

Good luck, you're already in a good spot that you're thinking about this at 15. If you can use your remaining high school summers to do any sort of technical part time job or internship (ie instead of fast food or a mall job) such as shadowing a physician, volunteering with repairs and handiwork at a church or habitat for humanity, doing a computer coding bootcamp, heck even an acting summer camp or some shit. You will be in a MUCH more powerful position than your peers to decide your future

Be a cool dude, make connections and stay in touch with them, work well, stay healthy to have a good attitude (this makes otherwise hard things easy), and good things will come. And wherever you go, rewards come with some form of risk, at the very minimum, the risk of a little discomfort. You will stay on the up and up.

As I have gotten older, life is much less binary than I used to think. People have many different standards of success and happiness. ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN! Especially when you make connections

Accountant here. Office jobs suck. Accounting is 55% women. Pay is fairly shit until you make partner.

That said. You learn a ton about business (accounting is the language of business).

My recommendation: at least get an associates from a community college. Set yourself up with decent prereqs like math and accounting, business etc.

Then become an electrician or something similar and finish your degree online or in the evening.

There's a balancing act: you don't want to sit at a desk all day for 40 years nor do you want to be craning your neck on a ladder running wire for 40 years. A business related degree will give you the skills to move into management in your trade OR change jobs if you get hurt.

Pro tip: people get hurt in the trades. Don't be the guy with no backup

If I had to do it over I'd learn a trade. Like electrician, welding, or some union job. Those guys are retiring in droves. And they get paid a lot + pension upon retirement. They don't work too hard. University is way too much these days. You underestimate how long it will take to pay those loans off. Unless you get a scholarship, learn a trade. Or go to a junior college to save money and transfer after that for prestigious degree. But still, everyone wants to be an engineer and it's a high-stress job that doesn't pay as much as you'd think. Programmers make more in tech industry. I talk to a lot of people.

You're thinking about it wrong...

Don't worry about acquiring a "career", worry about acquiring marketable skills. Things like coding, plumbing, auto mechanics...anything someone will trade money for. As long as you have specialty knowledge, you'll always have a way to make money. If college is where you need to go to learn the skills you want, then go. Can you teach yourself the same stuff for less/free? Then do that. Once you teach yourself a skill, you will have that skill for life.
