If youre already debt free and have a three to six month emergency fund fully funded, then you have 20 grand. If either of those things isn’t true, then you’re doing it wrong. No sane person has interest bearing debts and the cash to pay them off. No debt and less money is always the better place to be in.

That being said, if you do have 20 grand in liquidity, it is my opinion that marijuana is going to be the internet of the next twenty years. When congress gets around to descheduling or outright legalizing pot, it is going to be game one and the money is going to come from everywhere and go everywhere. Look at California, Oregon, Colorado, and increasingly Massachusetts, and so on. Pot shops, grow operations, concentrate manufactures, tools and hardware makers and retailers. Once it’s legal(nationwide) and out on Main Street, the money is going to be staggering and if you need any help seeing the growth potential, drive around your town and count package stores. A ground floor investment in an up and coming startup in the marijuana space could turn into a major investment.

Unless you are willing to pay attention multiple times a day and have a way to get the money out of and into the market with no delay (more than 15 seconds is too long), don't invest a large amount right now. Take some play money and start learning, but don't expect a great return right now.

The market has been pretty flat for the last two quarters. Many of the major brokers introduced zero commission trading in the last few weeks. That is not a good sign, it is a sign that there is too money and that everybody is chasing it.

Ya... it’s tough to make a case for many financial investments right now, imo. Consider building a bug-out bag/medical supply bag, emergency food, water filtration, solar generator? precious metals/ maybe a small amount in crypto if you dont like rocks. The bulk I would just put in a 2% savings account and wait. Might also consider online real estate crowd sourcing like Fundrise or others (tho again, just small positions right now)

I recommend 6 months emergency fund, as do many money experts.

If I had extra cash, I'd invest it in the stock market. Contrary to popular belief, there is no imminent crash or recession. The forward P/E ratio on S&P 500 is 18.2.

Be careful what stocks you choose though. I recommend dividend aristocrats.

Don't do anything. Hold the cash so when a good deal arrives you can jump on it. For example, friends recently moved to Europe and had to sell their cars very cheap to local dealers. If I didn't have a teenager who would insist on keeping the car, I would have bought one for $4,000 below what they sell for on craigslist since I have the cash, like you do.

Bank CDs are a thing, less risk than the stock-market if you don't like that much risk.
