Is a Bachelor in Computer Science worth it?

Yeah, I've graduated and life is good. It is not for everyone, but if you can make through it, I don't see how it could be a bad idea. The job you'll get will be well paid, especially in North America from what I'm aware of.

Only if you are naturally into it in the first place.

If you look at it as only a lucrative trade, you'll probably fail at it.

if you've been programming and having fun, enjoy it, and want to make a career out of it with a goal, absolutely.

if it's just "well this pays a lot", you'll suck at it and hate it.

depends, if you want a job in amazon or google or facebook, and Micrososft, i would do bachelors & masters atleast, then get a $125k - $150k non califronia based job. PHD's get $150 to $175k or even $200K if its the right fields like data science or Machine AI. But remember, you will still have to teach yourself on the side and still participate in github to go above and beyond your competition.

Or you could if programming, just do projects on github and start making little money and self teach and not go to college at all, it really depends, and then get a job maybe even intern for free for experience to begin with. Even google and Facebook are coming around to atleast equating self taught to equivalent or higher than degreed applicants.

Computer Science, Information Systems Management etc.

I went years without my degree because I stopped going to school.
I reached a point where me not having a degree was crippling my earning potential even though my skills were above average. I still remember HR saying "you don't have a degree blah blah blah". I was a semester or two from completion at the time. I finally finished school in 2016.
I left the company I was with for more than 10 years and life is good.

Look at want ads. Some companies will not consider you unless you have a degree in computers.

Second, STEM majors are viewed as superior to other majors. I majored in Business. In my senior year in college I remember reading an article that said companies now prefer to hire STEM majors for any job because they are viewed as smart. Boy was that article on the money. A friend of mine majored in Physics. He got a job in 2 weeks. I was unemployed for a year. It's a long story but I fell into programming. I am a programmer now.

STEM majors have a leg up over other majors in my opinion.

What a shit career I've had with mine. IT sucks, and I tell everyone to avoid the career path if possible. I know a fridge mechanic who failed high school and gets paid just as much as me, and I have a great job (only in the last 5 years have I made as much as him - for 15 years before that he beat me by 10-30k/yr). Having said that, don't stop at the Bachelors, you really do need the Masters if you are going CS. Take it if you are interested, take it if you want to learn, but a B.Sc is virtually worthless IMO. I'd choose any engineering over CS, and I would recommend you do as well. I live in Canada, and I'll tell you no one gives two shits about a CS degree, or any other degree from what I can tell. Hell the CIO of the company I work for, a public company no less, does not have a CS degree, or any degree at all for that matter, and neither does the guy he appointed as director of IT.

I am a firm believer in education, but this corporate world sucks balls, and STEM field people get shit on. Like really, why get the CS degree when the Admin degree gets to be the boss!? Heck, if you are in IT in Alberta Canada, you are not eligible for overtime pay. You have to work it, but the employer is not obligated to pay you. Seriously.

I'm a self taught Software Developer who left school the day I turned 16 with no qualifications.

I got to my position through self study, and hard graft starting at the bottom and working my way up.

If I had a chance to live my life again and stay in school and get the CS Degree, you bet i'd definitely choose that option.

It's one of those things that makes getting in the door easier but once you have 3+ years work experience people basically acknowledge the degree as a brownie point and ask you about your work experience instead. If you have 3+ years experience as a developer in industry, nobody really bats an eye if you don't have a degree. I'd say get it because it will make life easier but it's not required.

When dealing with private sector companies that are not on the fortune 500/1000 or rely on the government for revenue, the hiring manager is more interested in someone they can play video games with (lan party); so naturally expect to be 'tutoring' co-workers who clearly didn't get the job based on their skill set. Expect some of them to try and ask you about your personal life indirectly, as not 'having a family' and 'settling down' is looked down upon.

Computer Science and Computer Engineering are the ONLY worthwhile majors to go tens of thousands of dollars in debt for. Big Tech Corporations need competent programmers, so that all the higher ranking engineers can continue to sit in meetings all day.
