Amen to that. Academia may have been a good deal 40 years ago, when there was actual useful shit to do, now 80% of papers I read are drivel by people who have run out of ideas or are trying to sell their BS as something more than it is. Faculty jobs are scarce, 200-500 applicants per job, as a faculty member you have to teach, get grants, train graduate students, and deal with non-stop departmental BS. The only good part about it is some semblance of freedom and job security (if you get tenured). At this point doing the science itself even feels BS-ey. I'm considering throwing it all to the wind and going to work for Apple or Google, actually working on something I'll see in people's hands before the end of my lifetime. Beats reading another bullshit article about something completely impractical in the circle jerk of Nature/Science, then to find out most of this stuff is irreproducible. For anyone reading this, go to grad school to grow as a person and challenge yourself, do a post-doc if you want to bolster your CV for a high-end job and to have some fun (pick a flexible advisor), but think very long and hard about pursuing an academic position. It is literal shit unless you luck out and get a few ultra-high publications out that these days are essentially a ticket to even get noticed. /rant

/s translates to "okay I'm done being sarcastic now" in internet language.

Love is a human social construct - it's simply chemicals in the brain, as the original post alluded to. You can assign whatever indirect poetic meaning you want, but love is simply our hormones convincing us that we should stay with one person. This is an evolutionary "win" in reproductive terms.

Now that we are no longer cave men, there is no real need for any one person to reproduce. Because of this, the only real value a woman has to me is sex and companionship. Because the vast majority of women don't have the interests and values that I would look for in a partner, I'm not going to waste my time looking for the very select few who I would actually date/marry.

Does that make sense? We're not all butthurt losers - for some of us, having an average girlfriend would mean a lower quality of life.

Edit: I'm as much of a hippie as anyone, but I'm also based in reality - love is whatever you think/feel is, which really demonstrates to what degree it exists "in your head".

Interesting argument. I have to disagree though. We are more than just biological beings. Have you heard of etheric energies and astral energies? There is science about this, good stuff if you look and don't get caught in some fluffy new age disinfo. Love and emotions have more than a physical aspect to them. Love is a state of appreciation you build internally and reflects into all aspects of your life, including relationships with other people.

I don't blame most men for giving up on most women. Unless you have the power to control a woman in a positive way to benefit yourself and her in a positive relationship, it's not worth it for most guys.

There are other aspects to humans as well. We have minds and hearts. The heart and gut are also brains in themselves. You can think with your gut and primal instincts (biology/animal self), think with your heart, feelings, intuition (subconscious), and also think with your mind and intellect.

I think it's important for everyone to love something, whether it be beauty in other people, someone special, a creative outlet, a profession, or something to be passionate about.

It's too damn bad this feminist programming has screwed up people's thinking so much that healthy, positive relationships and families seem like a thing of the past. Now we're left with the broken pieces of a broken society of many messed up people doing the best we can.

Male/female relationships are the essential building block or cell of humanity and our world. The first step to fixing the problem is identifying it and not being part of the problem. For that I respect all the courageous men who can say no and hold their integrity. If all men stood up and defended their integrity by living in truth, reason, self-respect, and honour, we wouldn't have so many shitty women. Women are terrible because they get away with it, same with employers. People manipulate and prey on people because they've gotten away with it with others... but first and foremost, we have to respect and love ourselves. Most men do not, and sacrifice themselves in a desperate chase for women.
