The comparison is unfair on so many levels.

First of all, modern combat soldiers exist and look manly and menacing. You can always enlist, deploy and become a badass too!

Then, try looking up XVII-XVIII century fashion, for example. Even military fashion. Wigs, laces, plumes, embroidery, hair powder, cosmetics for men... I actually miss the flamboyance of the men's dress of these times. Modern suits look bland in comparison.

Also many of those on the left were brainwashed or coerced to fight for cause that perhaps wasn't in their best interest. It's not a fate to dream about.
