I searched for this exact reply before wasting time writing it myself.
My ex wife always demanded I carry a $250,000 life insurance policy. Her reasoning was “if something happened to you I’d need to be provided for”. I told her NO. She flipped her ever-lovin’ shit. I explained to her that insurance is to HELP transition a difficult time, not a fucking lottery payout so you can retire and watch Lifetime and drink wine all day. She went so far as to complain to her circle of church ladies who indicted me for “not conforming to God’s will for a husband to provide for his own”. I pretty much told them in nice Christian terms to piss off and mind their own damn business (ok, ok I said it exactly like that).
Her life insurance? A small company-paid policy for $10,000. Just enough to bury her in a nice box and get a burger afterwards. She claimed “that’s all You need because you’re a man, you can work”.
I refused to carry any life insurance except free company policies I’d get just for working there, never more than $15,000. It drove her fucking CRAZY.
Which brings me to me admittedly bitter argument that men are not respected anymore; they’re seen as expendable and paychecks with a penis. Think about it. Girl gets married. Husband, 90% of the time, makes more money. She may have a job (again, 90% of which are inside, administrative type jobs in a climate controlled environment); she may not. But she has financial security.
Time goes by. She has a couple kids. Now she’s locked the male into providing for her and her children for the rest of his life, regardless of whether they remain married. It’s a win-win.
Husband has stress-related heart attack and dies in rush hour traffic. Luckily, he always carried a hefty $1,000,000 life insurance policy. After the cheapest funeral possible, she nets almost $995,000. She immediately retires from ever working again. She blows through $800,000 in three years on extravagant trips, luxury items, full 4 year college tuition for her children, and two houses.
Ten years later. Neither child made it past their sophomore year in college. One was imprisoned for trafficking date rape drugs, the other decided to become a Buddhist monk and hasn’t been seen for 5 years. Mom is now rapidly running out of cash and decided to get married again. She ditches her 3 fuck buddy Chads and puts the moves on a quiet but prosperous single accountant.
Unfortunately for her, he’s smarter and wiser. He sees through her charms and realizes she’s a mental and financial nightmare waiting to happen and quickly kicks her to the curb.
Now far beyond her sexual attractiveness for marriage, she liquidates all of her assets and buys a small flat in downtown. She now works for minimum wage at a temp staffing company that offers $10,000 in free life insurance.
FYI.... this was a true story. A small victory for the men for a change.

Yes but the scenario you described here is not the scenario in the OP. There was no danger, and in addition to men’s greater evolved physical strength from our hunter gatherer days, greater too is our ability to sense out actual danger and discern it from false alarms that would just waste energy that a hunter-gatherer living day-to-day didn’t have the calories to spare by racing to arms every time a weak and inexperienced tribal member gets spooked by their imagination. In short, in addition to trusting her husband’s physical prowess, a wife should also trust her husband’s judgement that it was probably just the wind or the floorboards creaking from temperature fluctuations etc. instead of ruining his sleep when he has to get up for work early the next morning.
