I think the best way to learn yo code is to pick something to build and bounce between learning / listening to tutorials and then expirimenting and trying to actually build alongside it.

In my experience trying to learn code without interacting with it is too abstract for most people until they've done a hello world or a few small programs to cut their teeth on.

Look up a guy on YouTube called Sentex, he has lots of interesting projects and in-depth tutorials regarding python and it’s many frameworks. He goes in detail on how to build and AI for GTA5 to a clean website design.

There's loads and loads of free stuff online, also there's /r/learnprogramming . Python is widely used yes but before you try to learn an actual language you should probably learn some fundamentals of programming first (data types, what is an array, difference between stack and heap, what is out of bounds, etc).

Like the code I'm learning right now in my Fundamentals 1 class is absolute garbage when applied to real world situations because they're not trying to teach us C++, rather they are using C++ to teach us the fundamentals that apply to all languages.

So we're not using a lot of the neat tricks C++ has for certain situations, we're doing everything the long way so we can see how it all works.

I guess you don't have to have that foundational knowledge but it'll probably make you a way better coder (and save you a lot of time ripping your hair out).

I would learn Javascript. Then you can code on web-servers (using Node.js) and the web-client. Javascript covers both.

Python is a good first language.

A word of caution if your ambition is to work for one of the big Silicon Valley giants: they are increasingly batshit crazy-feminist-SJW. Prepare for ideological brainwashing and indoctrination at company events, mandatory "education", etc. Prepare for feminine hygiene products in the men's room (because some men have periods). By their own admission they are extremely leftist (as Zuckerberg said in his congressional hearing) so if you are moderate, centrist or, God forbid, conservative then you will be undesired. If you raise issue with the dominant narrative you'll be promptly fired. Prepare for double standards, prepare for feminists hissing about "male privilege" and HR standing by and refusing to do anything about it. Prepare for a hiring freeze for white and Asian men. (Yes, this is all true and all have happened and it gets worse by the day.)

Don't think you can just keep your head down and work, this cancer creeps in everywhere: prepare for quotas for women and underrepresented minorities thus less likely be promoted if you're a cis (had to learn that word at work), straight, white man (or Asian for a lesser degree). If you're black or Hispanic or gay you'll get some brownie points though.

Go on Udemy. There are courses worth paying for, and they’re ridiculously cheap when they go on sale. This is because a good, coherent class can make a huge difference and save you a shitload of time and frustration.

PHP is also very good to know. I’m learning the Drupal 8 framework as time allows.

There’s also MySQL / PostgreSQL databases as well. I found MySQL easier to work with, but grudgingly do minor PostgreSQL tasks when I’m forced to (glare Atlassian).

You’ll also want to pick up some SysAdmin skills. Be sure you can navigate around Linux and Windows without too much trouble.

Python has one of the lowest entry requirements out of commonly used languages, so yeah, it's a great starter language. Don't limit yourself to mechanically copying some tutorials. Think of something you'd want to make, and make it, that's how you'll learn the most. And you'll learn it the fastest.

I would suggest that virtually ANY major language is (or can be) a "good language to start with" -- and moreover that festering about with worry over whether to "start" with this language or that one is pointless foolishness.

The PRIMARY "skillset" an ACTUAL (fully qualified, competent) programmer needs to develop is a manner of "thinking about how to chop up some 'problem' and implement an algorithmic system-solution to it"... which is fundamentally independent of the language being used.

Basic coding logic is the similar across most languages. I started in Fortran, but it was easy to pick up other languages as the syntax is what changes mostly. However, you have the object-oriented vs procedural divide. You can write procedural code in object-oriented environments. I think most people think procedurally as it is akin to the standard "recipe" or algorithm form of human thought.

Python is an excellent language to start with. In mainstream coding, it's mainly used these days to build scalable web apps. Google, YouTube, Yahoo, Quora, even Reddit are all written in Python. So if you want to build stuff along those lines, Python is the way to go.

Do you have any prior experience with programming? Taken any computer science courses, tinkered with HTML and CSS in your old Xanga/Geocities blog, that sort of thing?

If not, I'd highly recommend "Programming for Dummies." It's technically not free, but if you're resourceful enough, well...

If you already have some prior experience, I'd recommend thinking about what you want to build first. With that in mind, I can recommend some resources to get started and provide an answer if Python is the best language to start with.

PHP. Most of the large websites use that with bash.

In fact you don't really need to learn much bash to have a successful website. Just grab some back end open source software for the type of site you want. eg, if you want to start a search engine get cassandra and build on top of it.

Regarding PHP & HTML. I really hate mixing code and layout, it just becomes too messy and complicated. You can split HTML & PHP with smarty templates. Even today im still using this system
