The only way you mess something up at gym is if you ego lift. You start with very light weights and get the form right to prevent injury. Then you progressively overload from there.

As for diet, I love doing oats in the morning, good protein, high fibre, low calorie count, can fill you for a significant amount of time. Also, plan out your meals for the week and cook in bulk so you can have a week's worth of food prepped which then means you get to avoid fast food.

Combine some cardio with weightlifting. Nothing too heavy, but ideally you want to do a little bit of both. Swimming is great, because it doesn’t impact your joints so much. I’d keep doing that three times a week and if possible, do a little bit of weightlifting two times a week. Then slowly incorporate some jogging, or elliptical machine if you are heavy and have some knees issues. Again, nothing too heavy to begin with. You’ll build stamina and strength as you go and the increase when you are comfortable with. Don’t try to overdo it on the go because you’ll hurt yourself and that will be a hit on your motivation. But keep pushing yourself.

Diet is definitely going to be your best friend or worst enemy when losing weight. Definitely more than any exercise you do. First you need to do is cut your sugars. Specially when it comes to drink. Sweet drinks will pack quick and you’ll never notice until you see that weight on the scale not coming off. Water. Hydrate. All the time. I work in a aircraft maintenance hangar and we are not supposed to have water bottles on us. F***ck it. I always have one. Cut the sugary drinks and stick with water. That alone will make a huge difference on the scale.

As far as diet goes, you can find an infinite amount of diets out there and lot of fake science that support it. You need to find what works better for you and your lifestyle. I’ve tried going vegan, south beach, paleo, keto, and a few different other types of diet. Each one has its disadvantages and advantages. I strongly suggest you learn to cook at least a couple of good meals yourself if you don’t know how. With YouTube and all that information available at the tip of your fingers, not knowing how to cook is not an excuse. Find the time and find the motivation for it. I usually have a good size cooler I pack and bring to work with me. I leave the house at 5am and I’m not back until 6pm between work, gym and errands. I need the fuel. Bottom line you want to do everything in moderation. Meats and vegetables are a go. Stay away from the processed food. Is junk and it won’t do anything for you, ever. I once read in an article as a good rule of thumb “if you want to stay healthy, whenever you go to a grocery store, stick to what is against the walls” meaning produce and meats, mainly. Everything in the middle is garbage. Nowadays that’s the rule I’ve been following and I’ve been losing an average of 3lbs a week since I started 5 months ago.
That’s about the average of weight loss you want in a healthy way.

Lastly, don’t beat yourself on the bad days. There will be days you’ll cave and go back to the energy drink or just have a couch potato/pizza day. It happens but don’t let that kill your motivation. Motivations is temporary and requires constant feeding in order for you to achieve your goal. Is all a mental game. Get back in the game the very next day and move on. 50 push ups a day. If you cant do them , do them on your knees until you can.

Also find something you like. Martial arts are great. Because if you dont like it, you wont stick with it. So my advice is go try a bunch of activities until you find something you like.

I think a lot of guys really ARE interested in reading another man's progress in 'going his own way', whatever that might mean to you.

Energy drinks are pure cancer for your body, so it's a good thing you stopped drinking that shit!

I personaly don't like going to the gym so I cannot give any advice on this. I think swimming is really good for your body and muscle building too.

Steam organic potatoes and bring a bunch with you when you go out. It's dirt cheap, tastes great, keeps you satiated, makes a clean finger food, covers most nutrients your body needs, and will keep you lean as long as you don't add anything fatty to your diet.

Doorway pull-up bar and a couple of kettlebells — a 16kg and a 24kg.

On the pull-up bar you can do pull-ups, wide-grip pull-ups, chin-ups, leg raises, L or V hangs, front levers (awesome)... I highly recommend the Russian Fighter pull-up progressions for some rapid strength gains.

For the kettlebells, I split my workouts so as to work different muscles everyday, sticking to 3 sets of 3-8 reps. One-leg or Zercher-esque squats with both bells does the trick. Bent over rows, overhead presses, that inverted overhead press thing, Turkish get-ups, swings, and on and on...

There’re so many different exercises variations you can do with this simple setup.
