This movie proved in-group bias to me.

I was talking with my buddy and his wife at a dinner a couple of weeks ago and mentioned that I'd cancelled my Netflix and why.

At first, the wife was as offended as the two of us were, until she researched it. The moment she found out the director was a black woman, then it was 'Hold on now' and she started with all the usual talking points about how it was art and how we were judging it too soon, etc.

The moment she found out it was a woman that was being criticized...

My first thought; damn right. It's about time someone actually enforced some standards.

My second thought is this: There's a segment of the population that honestly thinks that anything should go, as long as it's either 'creative' or 'art'. I think it's garbage. Having prepubescent children twerking and grinding is not art. Having adults twerking and grinding isn't art, it's just softcore pornography. Note, I'm not against pornography...I'm against child pornography.

My third thought is: What kind of a useless parent would allow his/her child to appear in this?

Final thought: I've long believed that sexualizing entertainment is an effort to compensate for the fact that the show really isn't all that great. Look at current pop culture; boy bands who can't play their own instruments, female performers who lip-synch and/or use auto-tune. No real talent as musicians, but they look good and can make some suggestive moves, that's all that counts. The same could be said for musicians and comedians who demand the right to use any profanity or suggestive language they want. It isn't art, it isn't talent, it's hoping to get by on shock value.

This is just a continuation of that, an effort by the director to gain attention through shock value and hope that enough "open-minded, progressive" people will support her "challenging conventional morals" to make the presentation a financial success.

You know what? I think the director was fucking bang on, and it is WOOSHING over people's heads. Because in reality, this is EXACTLY what's happening to 11 and 12 year olds on social media.

This movie is starting the discussion. Will I watch it? No. But it's a step in the right direction, starting the social commentary of "maybe our kids are being sexualized too young. Social media is at the centre of this issue. Stop acting like fucking whores on social media.
