Great villains are often the ones throwing redpills and dark truths that no one wants to admit.

They're villains because they do stuff like, you know, murder and pillaging, but if you took those types of villains, got rid of their "blatantly" bad traits (again, stuff like murder and pillaging), they'd basically be anti-heroes.

Late edit: perfect example would be Vegeta. He was introduced as a typical villain. After Goku kicked his ass he became one of the most beloved characters in DBZ. He dropped his "blatantly" bad traits of just indiscriminately killing people for no reason, but the rest of his morals didn't really change. His kills against the Ginyu force for example showed Goku's flaws of how Goku just blindly trusts everyone while Vegeta understands dark and dirty truths. Goku wanted to show them mercy, Vegeta knew that the Ginyu force would just return to being badguys if they recovered. (though ironically Goku showing Vegeta mercy during their fight proved that it could work on the right people).
