I recently saw a post somewhere about a woman who likes to live everyday like it's the 1950's. First thing that came to my mind was "Hah, I bet she doesn't get hit by her husband when she nags him". But the second thing that came to my mind was that when people compare the present to the past, they never think about the ways society was worse than it is today.

If you make part of a minority, your life sucks

In most Western countries, if you were black for example, you probably would be born in a poor family, grow up with low education and have to confront racism (actual violent racism not the type people complain today on social media) every day of your life. Even if you did become successful in something, in the eyes of most people you would just be "another nigger".

If you live in a third or second world country, your life still sucks

Before globalization was a thing, you wouldn't have access to most consumable goods people from first world countries consider a daily necessity. And that is if you aren't starving or under a dictatorship.

And even if nothing above applies to you... you are still fucked

In 19th century Europe and America you would probably be drafted into a war. 20th century the same thing. If you weren't rich in the 19th century, you would be in heavy industrial labour, since white collar work was something that started to exist on the turn of the 20th century. Also, in many places, you were expected to marry and have children or pay a bachelor tax. Even in the 1940s and 1950s when society was tame in comparison to today, a lot of degeneration was already settling in.

We can draw parallels anyplace anytime. Every society lived from parasiting men (very often the wellbeing of some means the harming of others). What I am trying to say is NOSTALGIA IS WORSE THAN ESCAPISM because at least escapism knows it's false. Nostalgia creates the notion that something which never existed is recoverable.

Create a life worth living. Live for yourself. Remember you are going to die
