Greetings fellas,

Hey

I am interested in archery (especially sports archery, maybe hunting in the future)

It's damn good fun

but I would like some advice / insight on people who have had any experiences with it

I've got a compound and a couple of hunting crossbows

How difficult is it ?

It takes some practice, with a normal bow. Crossbows are cheating, archery on easy mode

Is it expensive ?

I got a starter kit of compound bow, arrows, targets etc for about £90 from here

Did you guys have fun while doing it or is it boring ?

It's fun, but it would be good to have someone to compete with more often

Any other tips that you can offer ?

Your fingers will get ruined

I did some archery as a teenager and I really enjoyed it. I can recommend you take a course or so, so you can try it out without buying all the equipment. And a course heavily depends on the teacher and the classmates you get, so if it sucks, maybe try another.

If you have a good teacher that can control his class, I think you will enjoy it - does he start with theory and safety? Else it's probably crap. Bows are weapons and should be treated like such. Even a rather blunt arrowhead can do a lot of damage, so safety is a very important topic. If you have childish coursemates, it can probably suck as well.

Aside from that archery is fun, I'd say. You have to be concentrated, but you can also relax. I learned a lot about awareness through archery. You usually get to be outdoors. You learn to control your muscles precisely, at first not to hurt yourself and later to actually hit something. Later you can get bows with really strong pull, if you want to so there's some muscle training included. You can chose for modern compound bows or go medieval with sometimes huge bows and insane pull. Or you can even try out archery on horseback, a friend does this from time to time, it's insanely difficult, but fun.

Archery is awesome, infact I am getting back into it. It can be inexpensive or expensive, depending if you want the latest gadgets, as with any hobby. Best advice before getting a bow is to go to our nearest range . They usually have bows you can test out to see if you enjoy it.

If you get serious it is expensive. I have arrows that cost over $150 a dozen just for the bare shafts. They then need to be fletched and have inserts glued into them. I would go the cheap route first to see if you like it. With the new compound bows you are going to need a release to shoot carbon arrows. There are a ton of sources online that can help you learn. See if you can find a local archery range near you. They might be willing to help.

I shot recurves, long bows and hybrids all during highschool. The price? It can get as expensive as just about any other hobby out there. The bow I started with (Martin Hunter recurve, 55#) was about $100? $150? It was incredibly fast bow, but pretty unforgiving on your release. So if you twisted the string just a hair or put too much heel in the hand you hold the bow with, it would be loud and toss your arrow god knows where.

The longbows I had (Various makes/models) tended to be very forgiving. You could do just about anything to them, and they'd retain their accuracy. They shot much slower than the recurve, though. The hybrid (Sky Raptor, takedown), you prolly guessed it, was more forgiving than my recurve and faster than a longbow. I still have it, and as of a year or two ago, it was still a solid bow.

I had a blast shooting. I used to go with some guys on Sunday morning at an archery range that had 3 trails that went off meandering through the woods. Every so often, there was a bale of hay to shoot at. Some of the shots were decently close (10 yards) while some gave almost 100 yard shots. We'd shoot a couple of the hay bales, and then turn off the trail into the woods, looking for stumps.

Someone would pick a shot that would be across a dried creek bed, or threading a needle through those two trees over there, or you have to squat down here and turn your bow sideways to hit the stump up there on the hill. Someone would also invariably hit a stump and their arrow would fall down. These guys couldn't hit the broadside of a barn, but when an arrow is left all vulnerable? Bunch of fucking Robin Hoods would suddenly show up...

We had an absolute blast, laughing about destroyed arrows or actually making some of those stupid shots.

Anyway, if you want to go more traditional than compound, look up 3 rivers archery. They have tons of stuff and deals for beginners all the way up through lifetime archers.

It all depends, if you're (as I was growing up) happy shooting at a foam target a couple times a month as a hobby, it's cheap and relatively easy. But if you want to get good and participate in competitions, it can get pretty expensive and pretty nerdy pretty quickly.

I was fortunate to be able to take an archery class to fulfill a requirement for college. We just did recurve bows which are pretty affordable I think unless you get a really nice one. I really enjoyed it, I think it would be great to learn more about.
