It's such a "privilege" that dowries were the norm in very many cultures. Hell, some still have them. With rare exception (extremely rare), women are a cost sink. In order to be willing to eat that cost, up front lump sum payment is required. Even then, it wouldn't be worth it, but it offsets some of the opportunity costs being burdened with a wife causes.
