Suggestions on learning to play the guitar?

Hey man. I used to play a lot more, but I've been busy with other things lately. It really depends on what music style you prefer, if you like rock music, get an electric. If you like more classical, then get an acoustic. Or you could buy both, nothing is stopping you!

Once you get your guitar, make sure you know how to tune it (You can find some tuning videos on YouTube). Start slow, and learn your music scales and basic chords. There's no rush to be amazing at guitar, just go at your own pace and enjoy the experience.

When you get some basic chords and scales down, look up some basic guitar songs for beginners. GuitarLessons365 is a fantastic instructor and he has a lot of free videos with step by step playthroughs.

About the time you have repeated a technique so many times you're getting sick of it, you'll be sounding good.

That's why most people will never play...not many will push through sucking over and over until they don't suck anymore.

Play every day... each day you skip you lose 3 days of callouses on your fingertips.

Same idea applies to performance. Repetition...

You're gonna be nervous in front of people, and you're gonna fuck up and embarrass yourself. This is a good thing. Familiarity breeds contempt. You will lose your nerves the more you perform... at this point I can perform anywhere in front of a big crowd and not get nervous... I kind of miss it actually. Now I just don't give a shit because I have done it a brazillion times.

Learn acoustic guitar first, not electric.

Learn music theory. Google the "Circle of Fifths".

Hang with musicians who are better than you. This is key...

Hi mate. My two cents.

You seem a little too focused on the end result and not on the journey. Learning guitar sounds great, but it doesn't matter how many mistakes you make whilst you learn. Maybe try and borrow a guitar or look for a second hand one. As you use it and watch other play, you'll learn more about it and yourself.

If you are really serious about learning to play, and want to get there quickly, I suggest to take actual lessons. Usually beginners do a 1hr lesson per week, which is a good pace to keep you busy.

Check out your local classifieds, and you should be able to find some highly qualified instructors.

The online stuff is a great compliment to your training, but not as effective as a real human teacher you can interact with in person.

I've played a few gigs at this point so I've gotten pretty decent at guitar. My advice;

1) Learn Theory: It is so much more fun to jam with people than to memorize chords, tabs, etc. Plus you learn to really comprehend and appreciate music. 2) Don't seek validation: You will never be rewarded in the way that you crave. This will make you frustrated and unsatisfied. 3) Practice Constantly: Even if you're just sitting around, play with a chord or fingerpicking.

I played the violin when I was a kid so I'd probably have a different way of going about it. I'd learn the notes and then find some sheet music to practice to.

In my experience a long time ago it took a while for it to feel natural getting into chord fingering positions and changing chords. Stick at it and it will come.

Motivation might also come from learning a (relatively simple) favourite song or two at first. Then practise every day even if only for 15 mins!

Pro tip - If the guitar you will be using guitar is not a "beginner model" (I do not believe in "beginner guitars". The quality is generally very poor, cheap materials are used in their construction, they never stay in tune, and are damn near unplayable, even for a pro) and it has been sitting unused for some time, then I strongly recommend having a tech do a complete set-up on your guitar. It's not expensive, worth every penny, and will feel and sound much better.

Honestly if you're just doing this as a hobby for fun, I'd just recommend learning some chords early on that go for simpler songs and then looking up tabs to learn other songs once you're feeling more ambitious. If you aren't too serious, like I am, then eventually it just gets to a point where you can play to ear and pick up things like that but it takes some years to do that.

But then again I took lessons for like 3 years before I just started doing my own thing which led to me not playing for about 4 years to which I just picked it up again like 3 months ago and I'm almost back to where I was. When I took lessons though I didn't really learn how to read music as much because my teacher was in a bluegrass band so he was just emphasizing feeling and hearing the music and not focusing on messing up and being right all the time but just enjoying it and playing with the right tempo. I played violin in school for like 5 years and that's where I learned a lot of the real musical knowledge I have.

So yeah man. If you want to be serious ish about it then for sure take lessons for a while because it will speed up the learning curve a lot but eventually I feel like it may reach a point where you just are gonna play it to jam and enjoy it not because you're actively trying to be Jimmy Page anymore haha.

I read all the other comments and they're great, but here's my 2 cents:

A) learn some basic theory as you are beginning. You don't need to master it, but at least learn the basics of intervals, scale building and chord creation. This will speed up the learning process significantly in the future, as you progress. You will not need to look up chords bc you'll just know how they work and you'll be able to make them yourself, on the fly, in multiple positions.

B) you can find tabs or chord charts for damn near any song online. Also tutorials for lots of them on YouTube. When you get some skills & begin to learn solos (if you go that route), you can even find backing tracks on YouTube for tons of songs.

C) and this is probably the MOST important: TAP YOUR FOOT when you practice. Always. You can try a metronome too but foot tapping is better because YOU have to control it, and it's often separate from the picking pattern or vocal cadence. The rhythm must come first. You can play fast or strum crazy patterns but if you can't do it in the proper cadence, you'll sound like a fuckgoof.
