Yup. In any crisis situation, the first response of a female is to scream and make racket. In some cases, that can help. Some animals will turn and run the fuck away from loud noises. In other cases, it only encourages the animal to investigate further. Likewise, some animals have an instinct to chase should you turn your back and run. Particularly mountain lions.

I was stalked by a mountain lion once. You know what I didn't do? I didn't fucking scream my head off. I looked directly at it, yelled in a deep voice, and split my arms wide and arched my back to appear as big as possible. He fuckin' split. A woman in the same situation likely would have been mountain lion chow.

Additionally, I see most people who get killed by animals to be eligible for a Darwin award. Most wild animals are fucking terrified of us and will telegraph the fact that they are about to attack from a mile away. If you get killed by a wild animal, in most cases it is your fuckin' fault. If you go into an unfamiliar environment which has indigenous dangerous wildlife without knowing how to avoid and possibly confront such wildlife should they be stalking you, you're a dumb ass. Learn to recognize the signs of an animal that is on the attack or about to change. Learn to recognize a fearful animal. Maybe even learn to recognize some animal tracks, so that should you see those tracks, you will steer clear of the animal's territory.

A few tips for those who might not know, I know most of us probably do, but it might save your life otherwise:

If you know bears or mountain lions are indigenous somewhere you are hiking/camping, while you are moving around, make as much noise as possible. Wear bells or sing or whistle loudly. Most animal attacks happen because the animal was startled and they think the human is an aggressor because they didn't hear them coming. When animals hear you coming, typically they will leave the area out of fear.

Never turn your back and run from a cougar. They will chase you down and they are a lot faster than you.

If a bear attacks you, if it's a Grizzly or a Brown bear, you might want to play dead. Sometimes these bears will leave you there and sort of 'bury' you or 'cover' you so that they can come back later to eat their spoils. This does not work on black bears. If you are attacked by a black bear, fight like a motherfucker. Punches to the nose or attacks to the eyeballs can get them to disengage. Bears, while pretty large and cumbersome, are very fast and can chase you down easily. Don't run. Try to appear big and strong and dangerous and make noise.

When camping, take care to control the odor of food, cooking, garbage and anything else that might smell good to a bear. Bears and other predatory animals have a very keen sense of smell and if they pick up the scent of food from far away, in all likelihood, they will come to investigate your campsite. Could result in them tearing up your shit and making a big mess, could result in you being woken up by a pissed off bear in your tent. Better safe than sorry.

Mostly, I recommend carrying a gun, mace, or a knife everywhere you go. All three if you really want to be prudent. Likewise, carry for the environment you expect to be in. A 9mm is better than nothing but it might just piss a bear off if you don't hit it in the vitals. Sometimes the report of a gun alone is enough to scare them off though. A flare gun or starter pistol could probably work to scare them off as well. And don't forget about the most dangerous animal. Humans.

I have this life experience when living with my mom, when a snake came to our home mom screamed and ran here and there until I pull her into a table then I killed that snake by being silent and following his movements. I was just around 13 at that time and mom was 45.
