No no, see there's your slimey language at play.

You said the government terrorises innocent civilians, didn't you?

But you're not innocent if you break the law are you? Breaking the law is a crime.

The law in this country is if you want to live in this country and enjoy all the privilege and safety and technological marvel, all of which was built by people that came before you that contributed their share, then you have to pay your share.

You can go live in the North Pole if you want! Nobody is gonna come looking for 30% of your spoils from ice fishing.

But if you want to live in this country and enjoy its perks then you pay the toll. And the toll is you pay your taxes.

So no they don't terrorise innocent civilians.

They enforce the law with criminals who commit crimes like not paying their taxes.

Now I know what you'll say next.

"They'll murder you for it!"

No no. Nobody is going to kill you for not paying taxes.

They might arrest you and you end up serving a custodial sentence because the law of this country is you pay your taxes.

And if you resist arrest then of course you might get hurt. The police are people too and they shouldn't have to tiptoe around a criminal who doesn't want to face the consequences of their actions. It's fair to assume such a person could be a threat to their safety?

So I guess if you don't want to serve a custodial sentence don't break the law, and if you don't want to possibly be killed don't resist arrest if you do break the law.

And hey if you don't like living by the laws in this country you could always leave and do it on your own?

If you do not give the government half your yearly earnings, men with guns come to lock you in a cage.

If you want to break the law you pay the penalty. You only get to make those earnings and enjoy those opportunities because millions who came before you contributed to this system. So you want to withdraw from this thing called society without paying your share?

Yup. If a criminal resists arrest there is nothing to assume they're not a threat to you.

And you're saying that isn't terror.

Someone who resists having their property stolen from them is morally blameless.

If you want to make a moral case, make one. Stop conflating the law with morality.

You want to stay in a place with insane benefits and privileges without paying the fee that it absolutely costs to keep it functional, that everyone else has to pay, and throwing a tantrum when you can't have the perks without paying up.

I see you as a stingy, tight fisted brat. Like you'll enjoy the country club, enjoy the five star food, the exclusive golf courses, and when the bill comes and they say if you don't pay it you don't get to be a member anymore you cry that your oppressed.

Here is my moral argument.

What we have here is a system where everyone chips in. A system where it someone falls over, generally we can help them up. If someone has put in a lot but doesn't have anyone to lean on we can see to it they're done okay by.

Somewhere where if you're attacked or murdered there's a wide web of resources that may not be perfect but there's a good chance you'll see justice.

A system where thanks to millions of people who came before you have untold opportunities because they paid their share. And you're having a tantrum because you don't get to not pay your share like everyone else has done and still get all the perks.

I don't see anything moral in what you say. I see m a repulsive, spoiled, ungrateful brat.

Rent isn't theft because:

When you rent you are voluntarily purchasing (that is to say not at gun point or force) a service that has a wide range of quality and price spectrum to fit your particular tastes and affordability level which may change over time. You can also entirely opt out of rent any time (contract ends or break contract) and you can move from renting to owning and thus no longer pay rent. You could also live at home and pay no rent. You can also split rent with roommates to reduce your rent burden. The rent amount can also be negotiated between the renter and owner.

I'm not sure any of the same could be said about common taxes (property tax, sales tax, income tax, carbon tax, death tax, fuel tax) which are almost always 1 product (if you even get a product) in which you are a forced customer and in which the government has legally barred anyone else from giving you an alternative in price, quality, or quantity. Government tells you what you'll pay and it's not consensual and they will find you if you don't pay. Even if you opt out of the government service you may or may not be using (property tax) or receiving (social security tax) you still have to pay the tax.

Another major difference between taxes and rent is the rate agreement. The rate of your rent is always consensual (even if you'd prefer it was lower, the contract keeps your landlord from raising your rent for the agreed upon rent period). The rate of your taxes are often not up to vote nor is your vote necessarily honored if it is up to vote. That is like someone else voting your "rent" up for you. Other than those differences taxes and rent are kind of the same thing.

I'm not against taxes (against certain ones) but I think your example wasn't as well thought out as it could have been. For example I do think government should levy taxes for roads but things like property tax, income tax, social security tax I find morally unjust and fiscally insolvent especially today when the services those taxes are supposed to provide are at their worst state yet.

If ten people live in a house and nine vote not to set the house on fire then the one does should there be consequences?

This country is a democracy. If you don't like living in a democracy, leave. You don't get to decide that your little part of it isn't a democracy anymore because you think it's unfair.

This is something that has been set up and built upon centuries before you were born. Every technological advance, every modicum of comfort and safety that has propelled our species has done so in the shelter of society.

Then special little you come along and decide you're doing to start chipping away at it because you don't like the rules.

Right so you want to tear the current system down, but you can't tell me what system will replace it, you can't tell me who will decide the rules, you can't tell me who will enforce it, you can't tell me who will pay them.

What you're telling me is we have this system here that might not be perfect, that you might not like being held to the same standard as everyone else, but you have no idea what's going to replace it when we tear this system down, we'll just figure it out as we go I guess?

No.

You don't get to have that.

If you don't like this system, leave. It's that simple. But what's happening in this particular area is this particular system. And if you want to stay here and exploit it off the backs of millions who came before you and contributed to this system so you have more opportunity that 99.99% of humans who have ever lived, then you pay your fucking share like everyone else.
