I think it arrived around the time Youtube made a push for channel owners to upload custom thumbnails for their videos. The mouth open in mock surprise was a big favourite - even though it makes the subject look like a window licker - and is a form of theatrics for the small size of medium. As soy boys, nu males, and neckbeards are the main viewers of this dross - seeing their Youtube idols gain popularity - and with status comes pussy - it's only natural for them to want to emulate the success.

My theory is probably bullshit, but, there you go.
