I recently started watching The Expanse). I just finished with the second season. Parts of it are very nicely done, and some parts of it are a bit clunky, which is only to be expected from the a television drama. What really stands out, though, are the Mary Sue female characters. Most irritating of all is a female Martian marine (Roberta "Bobbie" Draper) who is supposed to be a badass fighter who can put down multiple men without breaking a sweat. In one of the last episodes of season 2, she beats an older military officer into submission, then a young security guard in order to escape from the Martian embassy, and then a bit later she defeats the entire security detail of a very wealthy man. We all know that in the real world very wealthy men hire former special forces as their body guards, and these guys aren't under military rules of engagement, so their handling of a threat is going to be pretty ruthless. Nevertheless, they're no match for a teenage girl.

In earlier episodes this sort of thing was merely annoying, but by the end of the second season it becomes so over-the-top that is spoils the plausibility of the narrative. The Naomi Nagata character is another supposedly smart, tough, independent woman who don't need no man, but the writers keep this character a little more real so her Mary Sue moments are kept below the threshold of being ludicrous, but the "Bobbie" character has permanently damaged the show in my unhumble opinion. I'll watch the third season, but I'll groan each time I see the Martian marine because the character is not longer even slightly believable.
