Anytime I see an article regarding game on a site ending with .au I never take it serious. This the same country that banned Saints Row: The Third for having a melee weapon that resembled a giant purple dildo.

The way this study is being reported is completely at odds with what the research actual says if you dig in a little deeper.

It's true the study says that unemployed men spend more time playing video games. It also shows that unemployed men spend LESS time on leisure activities in total than they used to and spend more time activiely looking for work.

So the proper conclusion is that unemployed men actually spend more time looking for work and less time engaged in leisure than they used to. Of the (reduced) time they spend on leisure activities, the amount of video game playing has increased relative to other activities (going to bars, hiking, woodworking hobbies, whatever).

Is this some sort of shocking revelation? Video games are fun, can be picked up or abandoned with little time investment, and are pretty cheap relative to other things people do for fun. If I'm looking for work and need to keep a flexible schedule to go to interviews as the pop up unpredictably and I'm trying to not spend money because I don't have a job what am I going to do for fun? Join a local kite-sailing club or just zone out for awhile doing something cheap and easy?

This is all so stupid.

Meh. I used to game a lot but now not as much. I've been trying to teach myself programming and have been reading more. I still play but mainly just anything for Nintendo or super Nintendo now on my retropie. I don't play anything online anymore because all my friends are never around to play because girlfriends. You know I wonder if guys just stopped playing games and did other hobbies, what excuse they would use? Guys golfing too much? Guys reading too much? Kind of an interesting thought.
