It's not just prostitution. Selling sex is an easy way to make it in life for women. (that's not to say being a prostitute is easy - I certainly wouldn't want to do that lol.)

As someone who sees escorts regularly (like nearly weekly) I can tell you first hand that it isn't nearly as easy as you imply. First off they have to be fairly attractive and stay in shape but that is just a prerequisite. Next that have to get actual clients and then be willing to sleep with them, usually less desirable men because face it if we were more desirable we wouldn't be paying. They get paid great for that one hour, but how many clients per week do they actually service. It can be very hit or miss. Even if they do well it's not a job that lasts very long. After age 27 or so they potential client pool shrinks very quickly and they have to transition to something else. Just about every escort I see is usually in school for something that is long term.

Whether it is a waste of money, that just comes down to priorities. Having sex with women is my favorite thing in life. I would prefer to spend my disposable income on that as opposed to trucks, motorcycles, or cabins in the woods that seem to be all the rage around here. Sure it's expensive but it's cheaper then marriage. I'm fine that women can make a living doing that. More power to them. I'm here because I think marriage is a raw deal and have no interest in a relationship, not because I want to keep women down. If they are supporting themselves, great, then we don't have to.

What is a "waste of money" is relative to how much money one has. If you have "fuck you" money, the cost of hookers is nothing. While most upper middle-class people would still find the money better used elsewhere as the cost of hookers over the lifetime would probably have an impact on retirement plans.
