My wife and I have a 6 month old baby girl and a two year old boy. Wife hasn’t been too happy since returning to her job from her last maternity leave and I actually just got a new job.
At my old job I was working 45-50 hours a week. At my new job my hours fluctuate a lot — it can be anywhere from 60 to 80ish hours a week at the worst. I make a lot more though so there’s that. The pay raise makes it so my family can do really well on just one paycheck. My wife is ecstatic because this means she can be a SAHM which is what she’s wanted.
The issue is that my wife and I aren’t on the same page about what this change would mean. Before, when our work hours were almost equal, we divided housework pretty much equally. We also paid a housekeeping staff to come every other week to help us out. (Plus we have a nanny to care for our kids while we work).
I told my wife that her staying home would mean no more housekeeping staff or nanny. These cuts will help us afford to have just the one income and I also think it’s practical. She was mostly agreeable to that. But then she said that we should divide the chores 50-50 still.
I told her there was no way I was going to be taking on as many work hours as I am and then come home to cook or clean too. That would defeat the entire purpose of her quitting her job.
She looked at me like I was some sort of Neanderthal but I think what I’m saying is completely fair. I’m not expecting her to do any heavy lifting. Just tending to the kids, cooking, and doing a reasonable job keeping up the house. I recognize that this would be an old fashioned way of living and if she ever wanted to return to the workforce I would support her 100%. But I think it’s fair that if I’m the sole paycheck and working crazy hours I don’t come home to more stress and chaos.
Obviously my wife and I will have to work this out between ourselves. I’m mainly posting here as a sanity check to see if my thoughts on this issue are completely off base.
Edit: Well this blew up since I last checked it. I can see people are really passionate about this topic and you all have encouraged me to think more deeply about it. I will read as many of the (4.2K??) comments as I can. I think I’ll let my wife take a look at the thread too since many have gone out of their way to offer constructive comments for both of us.

Lets see how long it takes for me to get banned:
Let's not forget that "stay at home mom" is just another way of saying "homemaker." Choosing to update the lingo doesn't change the fact that real women of previous generations would take care of the kids and the home, while the husband provides the resources. Now that the wording has changed, the OP's wife thinks the responsibilities have too. With that being said, sure the guy should pick up after himself, nobody wants to be with a slob. Seriously though, she can't expect 50/50.

Yep, she goofs off with the kids all day, then when youre done working your ass off, you can take over and she gets to goof off even more.

Goof off?! What?!

Ok if you have kids, they are going to be in school for most of the day, unless they're really young. You drive them to school at 8am or so, they stay till 3 or 4. That's about 6-7 hours of you idk cleaning up shit around the house? If there are extracurriculars or a job they're gone even longer. Surely you don't have 6 hours + worth of shit to clean every day in a modern household?
Kids get home, you send them to do homework, maybe let them play or whatever for a couple hours, cook + clean, send them to bed. On the weekends you're both home, maybe you go to the park, let them sleep over at a friends house, whatever. If they're sick you take care of them, but they're in fucking bed all day, no way they're causing trouble.
WTF is so hard about SAHM? Nothing as far as I can tell.

I took care of my buddies kids while she was in the hospital for a week. Honestly, it was incredibly easy and they were 6 and 8. I was really bored a lot of the time. I couldn't believe how easy it was and when I said so, she had a look on her face like she wanted to kill me for giving up her secret.

Geez, it takes me two hours to vacuum, mop the floors, clean the toilets and fold the laundry. I own a two-storey house. Throw in mowing the lawn once a week in the summer. I've contracted the driveway snow removal. And, I cook all the meals on the weekend and supper every evening. Oh, did I mention I also work at least 40 hrs a week--no wife (thank God). And the thing about cleaning the house--you don't have to do it every day--even with little kids--you just have to tidy up.

It’s when you do the nightly routine when things get hectic. And that starts around when parents get back from work. That’s when you help with homework, make dinner, shower/bath, brush teeth, read a bedtime story and tuck into bed. And whatever other traditions your family has.
Between the morning when you get the kids to school and when night time it’s basically completely free.
So that post is asking the guy to do all the hard work (morning and nightly routine) while the mother just sits at home do jack shit. Sure the time is 50-50 but the actual work of raising the kids is 70-30.

Hey I’m not trying to cause a fight or anything I’m just genuinely interested in your opinion. Sorry for the novel. I agree that OP in AITA should pick up after himself or help out if the wife is unwell or unable to do something but you can’t seriously believe that staying at home is cruisy. I agree that if they’re in school and OP’s wife could even go back part time, it’s much easier but what about when they are not in school? These kids in the post are not school aged so comparing them to a 6 and 8 year old who is in school is not the same ball park.
My sister is a SAHM while on paid mat leave with a 3 yo and a 3 mo. Changing a nappy whilst keeping an eye on a curious 3 yo is hard. Trying to put the 3 yo to bed while 3mo is screaming to be picked up and fed is hard. Trying to do washing with both is hard. Trying to shower half in the door half out so you can watch them both is hard. Hell, trying to clean the house without having 3yo instantly pull things out again is hard. She doesn’t get sick days, when she is sick she has to still do everything because her husband can’t afford a day off as he’s self employed. I’m at my sisters alot helping out where I can because she’s at breaking point. Her husband works so he doesn’t do the ‘night shift’ with the 3mo when she wakes up for a feed. He isn’t up at 6am when 3yo is awake and wanting to start the day even though my sister has just gone to sleep at 4am after a feed. He helps out everywhere he can, he is not a lazy or uninvolved father at all. But please don’t say it’s easy unless you actually have children and are almost raising them by yourself.

My kids are 3 years apart. My wife (ex now, but still together at the time) frequently worked weekends, and I'd have the kids. A 3 yo, and a 3 mo at the same time, is extremely easy. I was able to shower, run laundry, do dishes, vacuum, take care of the kids (changing dirty diapers, while potty training the other, feeding them, etc), and STILL had time to kill. SAHM is easy. I would have gladly done that, and let my ex earn the bread, but in this day and age, a one income home isn't usually realistic, unless that one income is pretty high. This guy ISN'T the asshole here, the wife clearly is. He's the one earning the paycheck, and she's playing the victim. She can pick up the slack.

Oh snap you’re lucky haha! I’ll send you over to my sister for a hand 😂 but seriously, thanks for your response.

I do have children. I was the chump who raised them because their mother was a lazy cunt. I know all this because I lived it.
You think I just knew the hard parts about parenting from reading about it second hand? No, I’m still doing daily routines when I get my kids 30% of the time. While I was married I was the main provider and the main parent. And now I’m basically a single father. So please don’t give me your sanctimonious shit.

No need to be rude to me, I was just having a discussion.
[–]Gibits0 points1 point2 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Please don’t do that. That’s what girls do. Be condescending then get all offended when things don’t go there way.
Did it ever occur to you that I know about child routines because I am a father myself? That I know what they entail because I am one? Or that I know how mothers duck out of being a parent and the rationalizations they use to justify it?
You think I just pulled it out of my ass? You tell me not to speak as if I was a single parent (which I am) yet you do the exact same thing to me. And then you expect me to “not be rude”..... man you are something else.
[–]imnotadamnrobot0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
No you are something else. I can’t imagine being rude to someone over a discussion, regardless of what they’ve got in their pants, especially when I said I wasn’t looking to attack anyone and was interested in responses. I genuinely didn’t mean to piss you off.
EDIT: for further clarification, my part about not having children was directed at the user who mentioned babysitting his buddies kids.

That a sure way to get absolutely divorce raped

This sounds familiar. At least his wife felt the need to ask. My ex just went on strike when I got home.

Most do. Sickening.

Works up to 80hours a week and his wife thinks he should do the same amount of housework as her lmao. Sounds like he married someone lazy
