Monogamy doesn't truly exist any longer. I actually have a hard time believing it ever "really" existed, but when we built civilization, we figured out that we have to keep our animal instincts and urges in check, otherwise we tend to fuck it all up.

Thus, we erected mechanisms and societal norms that helped us be a polite society, so that we aren't killing each other and pounding the corpse while beating our chests and bearing our teeth. We did this so that we aren't in constant pursuit of frivolous and furious mating, my any means necessary, in an effort to pass our genes along as many times as possible.

We did this so that we aren't placing too much value on the qualities we "instinctively" select as valuable, based on biological functions that failed to evolve as fast as our civilization did. We realized that things like stability, intelligence, empathy, compassion etc. were more beneficial to society as a whole, than clubbing the fuck out of someone who spent a little too much time looking at the stars instead of sniffing pussy, and dragging their corpse out into the field to jump up and down on, hooping and hollering, while the females circle around and present their asses while batting their eyes and wooing over the tingles that primal and violent act created.

All of this essentially led up to, and promoted, monogamy. Along with the creation of a lot of institutions. Think about religion -more than a literal bearded dude in the sky, religion is about allegorical evidence that we must fight our base instincts, else we are destined to live out our days as the animals we are, throwing away thousands of years worth of evolution that led up to sentience and critical thinking. It is about respecting the necessary compromises that allow us to not be in the stone age.

Somewhere along the line, probably within the last couple of hundred years generally... maybe being narrowed down to the last couple of generations. More specifically the last couple of decades, and finally the last couple of years -our technology removed a lot of the struggles and hardships from our lives. We no longer needed these institutions and mechanisms, so society shifted in a bad way.

Now it seems we're headed straight back to our past, in a way that will in essence bring us back into a dark age.

Somewhere in that general time frame, we became the mouse utopia. We've all seen that experiment, and how it ended.
