Because the previous government had to make cutbacks. Austerity was needed because the government before them spent so much money, increased our debt, sold off loads of our gold at a ridiculously low price, and to put a cherry on top of the shit sundae, when they left office the chief secretary to the treasury left a note saying "I'm afraid there's no money".
People forget this when they're complaining about cutbacks of our last government.

It was great. After the war,only the rich could afford health care. When the nhs was brought in it was properly funded. Unfortunately income tax cuts affected the funding and now Britain pays in less than other developed countries in respect of GDP. As usual the rich get richer and can afford private health care.

I don't disagree at all that Germany's approach to socialism worked because they were a homogenous nation. But ours is not.
Hitler's problem was trying to take over the world instead of just being happy with running the country that he single-handedly resurrected. Had WW2 not started, he'd have been regarded as a great statesman
