Modern rat race, keeping up with the joneses ect ect. Competative hierarchical social conditioning that keeps the plantation well oiled and running. Good on you for taking note and not playing into it. Most are too insecure and try to keep up with the people around them. The irony is that the people they are trying to keep up are doing those things also to combat insecurity, a classic blind leading the blind.
