The problem is that the US taking a simpler stance, closing themselves off, would create a power vacuum in the world. But I think the US government becoming smaller and less intrusive would be beneficial as long as people aren't hurting one another.

Well, we lost our independence in 1871. The whole " income tax" thing didnt exist. America was great back then, freedoms abound.
