I still think it has do to with the biological urge to reproduce. This however is masked by the idea for men that the right woman can make his life better, and the woman thinking that the right men will fullfill her every need (notice the difference in ammount of claim, the man just want his life to better, the woman wants her life to be perfected by him). Anyway, pre-internet woman had less excess to man and therefore choose lesser man which did their best and in general they led a decent life, also divorce and expecting that marriage would always be great and perfect was not really the issue of that time. Marriage was more like another part of life, just like school, and this provided many people with roles and identies which in general made people feel pretty complete and content with their lives.

However nowadays women have an excess of men, and expect for this reason that they can cherry pick the best mate. This however is difficult because there could always be a better mate around the corner, which makes relationships instable and vurnearable. On slip up, on time she does not get what she wants, she had 10 other men willing to offer. Men on the other hand do not have this luxery therefore they tend to cling to any female they might have a change with (basically any female that does not shut them down from the get go). Since these man cannot get a girlfriend (because of the high standards) they internalize there is something wrong with them because the better mates do get girls, therefore they build up fake confidence by trying to look and act like the better mate. This sometimes works and sometimes they gain confidence from this, but other times they become a fake personality. So basically you got a shit ton of picky women and a shit ton of man trying to become a better mate by acting like them.

Moving on to when people finally have a relationship. In the beginning it is the honey moon stage, everybody is happy and content that they finally have a mate. For the women it is probabbly the mate she had to go through 10 guys for, and for him the girl he worked so hard for to win over. They think they finally are at the finish line and it is smooth sailing. But this is wrong ofcourse, after a couple of months flaws start to emerge. He will eventually change because one slip up and another idiot is at her call. Therefore she will resent him for not being strong and confident (lesser of a mate), and the relationship breaks, or they make eachother misserable for a while then make eachother happier and then misserable ect ect.

So rationally it would be way better to just leave this shit behind. But here is the kicker, most people do not know how to function withhout this goal in mind. They will fall in to existential despiar. Simply because they are so focussed on sex/relationship/their value, that they forget to build up anything remotely chrachter wise or morally wise. For men this is a problem because they need to learn how to function again outside of the pussy chasing scenario, for women another men will come along. This is what alot of men experience when going MGTOW, that they spend so much time doing stupid shit while they could do one of their true passions. So for most there is no other option then to stupidly chasing their tail, because it is not necessarily the getting of the tail that is important, but the chase and goal itself. I think biologically speaking chasing the other sex for reporduction (disguised as sex/hornyness ect), is on of the core goals for us human beings, but it is an emotional goal in the sense that it is an underlying goal which we like to complete from our biology, the problem is with the whole sexual market value thing people have internalised that goal as something rational, as something that we need to do to feel good and be succesfull (basically the meaning of our existince). This however is not true, their are many rational goals one could obtain and leave the biological goal as a mere secondary goal. Then again to take this leap is hard and most are afraid to do so since ther internalizing of the biological goal.

Sorry for the long reply, but I think this the most basic explanation for your question.
