If there is truly nobody you want notified, put down a bogus name and number.

If you want someone to make health or financial decisions if you're not able to do so, I'd talk to a lawyer.

Family: think broader, like extended family if you still keep in touch

This one is the bane of my life at times. Want to rent a new apartment? Who is your guarantor? Err... no one. Starting a new job, who is your emergency contact? No one if I die or something just chuck me in the trash idc my soul has already departed. Heck basically anything with "who is your next of kin" bullshit. Why do you assume I have one or care about them? I technically do have family but like fuck I know anything about them or care about them.

Worst example of this was when I was involuntarily committed to a mental hospital when I was at a low point in my alcoholism. Want to go outside? Sorry need a chaperone. When can I get let out? When you have a chaperone who can take you home we will not let you leave alone. All the while charging me mind. Oh and I had no contact with the outside world either because they banned all phones and internet and that stuff. Literally the only reason I was able to get out was because my company was obviously concerned as to where the fuck I'd disappeared to and after a week or so got the answer. Still took them two months to send someone to pick me up because they wanted to make sure I was well (fun fact: all the stay in that hospital did was make me hate everyone even more and ramp up my addiction 10x, fuck mental health professionals if I ever go postal it'll be at a mental hospital). That was literally the only circumstance in which they let me go - that I had someone to pick me up. Which makes me wonder, if I had been unemployed would they just have kept me indefinitely? Like seriously they would not under any circumstance let anyone out without a relative/close acquaintance to pick them up (that's how it works in my country anyway).

One of the biggest ways they try and keep you in society is by basically requiring you to have family and friends to do anything. It is absolutely fucking bullshit. Heck even in the court system you have character witnesses and all that shit. You are literally penalized for not being a social person. And don't get me started on how companies hate people who don't have big social media presences when hiring. I'm just fucking lucky enough that I'm in the one field where it is completely understandable to be completely against oversharing on social media (infosec). But seriously I fucking hate the assumption that everyone has someone who they care about or who cares about them. No I am alone why do I fucking need an emergency contact. When I'm dead no one will care and that's exactly how I want it.

You don't have to put nuclear family

If you don't have any family members who you trust, try your pastor or priest if you are religious.

This way someone is available to answer a phone call if you are in a coma.

Honestly those emergency contacts don't hold a lot of merit. It's more of a way for companies/organizations/governments to cover their own ass.
