I got a promotion in this one job over 4 women who treated customers like shit. I had taken the bizarre approach of being friendly and professional with all customers, and my boss noticed. Shocker, I got the promo and the 4 women didn't, making me their supervisor. Then I got nothing but resentment and underhanded crap from them. I fired one, then another one stole from the company and bailed.

The promotion was based on merit. Imagine that. They didn't want to promote workers who treated customers like crap. Today, they would probably cave to pressure and just promote one of the women who didn't earn it.
