Back when this pic was taken...the only way a single man would "meet" a quality woman of marriageable age was if her father invited him to his house for dinner. The prospective bride would be the one to prepare the meal in order to show her prospective husband her abilities in the kitchen. Prior to sitting to dinner, the bachelor would sit in a parlour with the girl's mother and father (possibly a grandmother or maiden aunt would be in attendance as well) to answer questions about his intentions and show his future prospects. Note the young lady would not meet the man until they all sat down to supper--where she was not allowed to address him directly.
