I used DuckDuckGo to look up some numbers. My math skills are sketchy at best, so would someone please check this for me?

The population of the USA as of 2020 is estimated to be about 331.60544 million, which if I read that right is 331,605,440. [1]

According to the CDC, the marriage rate is 6.9 per 1,000 total population. They say there were 2,236496 marriages in the year for which the stats were given. The divorce rate is 2.9 per 1,000 population. [2]

This is NOT what happened, (because of the way time works), but if the same couples who had married that year also divorced that year were to divorce at the same rate as the marriages that divorced that year, then the rate of marriages that lasted would have been 4.0 per 1,000 population. As I calculate it, that is .4% of the population, (I would read that as “four tenths of one percent.”)

In a room of one hundred married people, not one of them can expect to escape divorce, but if there were two hundred married people in the room, one of them could almost smell their marriage surviving.
