I'm going to blindly assume that you're still young. Trust me when I tell you that friendship isn't something you pick. It just happens one day.

My two best friends in the world, I've known since we were 18. That's 32 years of fighting, consoling, taking advantage of, motivating, fighting for, encouraging and yes - loving each other. We're family. The family that we chose.

From those 2 friendships, others have developed and I've found myself in the middle of a great circle of people that would do anything for me.

Its not a matter of finding people of whom you like everything. Its about finding people who, at their core, are good, trustworthy and morally sound.

You're going to be wrong about some and get completely fucked over, but thats part of the overall process of learning yourself and how to read people.

Don't get discouraged. Shit has a way of coming together.

It's pointless to stop meeting new people because they are selfish. Humans are selfish in nature. We do things for our own benefit and self pleasure. Even a parent loves their child for themselves. They love them and care for them in order to satisfy their parental sensations. We help people for ourselves. We might be helping to feel good about ourself, to prevent other people from condemning us etc. It is in our nature. So expecting people do things without a reason or benefit would be delusional, we don't live in a magicland.

What can you do about it? Don't have unrealistic expectations from people. Don't give up entirely either.

I would not say it is dead, it's just hard to come by, and the reason for that is because I think loyalty is inherently masculine. If you think about it you go back 50,000 years you and I are 5 feet tall and hunting some 800lb ice age sabre-beast and all we have is a sharp stick, whatever beef you and I might have back at the camp (both got our eye on the same female or something) out here the other man might just save your life. I think that's the evolutionary origin for the "band of brothers" loyalty that men can share.

The problem today is that most men are weak, and you cannot trust a weak person. So, butch it up. Get yourself involved in some masculine hobbies. Ride a motorbike or something. Put yourself in places where you're going to be in the company of like-minded guys and you'll find lasting friendships.

What exactly is loyalty anyway? People inevitably grow apart and move on.

I understand that it's all fun and games when you're a teenager but eventually adulthood and responsibility come into play and neither of them can simply be avoided, unless you're a complete moron with no ambition and still living with your parents in your thirties.

I used to be friends with a guy when we were teenagers and in our twenties, but he never grew up and still had that high school mentality in his thirties. Talking to him a few years later I was reminded of this, it was like having a conversation with an angry teenager with no direction, ambition or self awareness. At this point we were only friends out of obligation and nostalgia.

I slowly faded out our already dead friendship and moved on.

People change and expecting loyalty from people these days is just a complete waste of time and energy.

There is only one person in this world that you can rely on....and that person is YOU
