I do not see any as long as you have some serious emergency fund and catastrophic health insurance, you'll be fine. P.S. Do not ditch your GF but work on her ditching you. Money problems, extreme clinginess, being sentimental, expressing your feelings or crying perhaps will do it. Good luck!

Why not just leave her now? I see no reason to keep her around, she will only hold you back.

The idea of ditching the money drain girlfriend is a good idea. But at 28, I would say set yourself a 5 year window and create for yourself a minimalist living situation, taking the amount you can save and:

Create 12 months of an emergency fund based on your highest level of living expenses.
Invest in passive income producing ventures. I take dividend stocks for example and I'm getting 10% a year on them. Swell that up while you're young like this and when you're 35, your needs in southeast asia will be fully paid for, and you can work in your field at low stress levels if you want.

Derive your satisfaction and validation from yourself. From your progression towards your goals and getting closer to that goal.

Step 1, close your wallet. Tell her you are losing a half day a week at work. Suggest she take you out sat night. Trash will take itself out by the 31st as valentine's will give her ample time to find a new chump.

Only thing with SAE, get a good international health insurance plan and talk to an accountant with knowledge about holding offshore accounts. No point in working abroad if the Gov will fleece you on return.

To fund said freedom at the bare minimum, you need to ditch all unnecessary items in your life yup.

When you can afford more extensions in your life, you've already learned enough to live without said extensions, and your conditions for what's necessary will already have evolved.

Well you can do that for a few years when you are still young. But you can’t keep that up forever. So have a plan B and a landing zone afterwards. But telling people that you are only 28 and want to take a gap year from life to see more of the world isn’t all that strange.
