For an apprenticeship, if you don't have experience, you find a mentor, and you bring them your best drawings and designs. Walk in knowing your safety and health regulations, and knowing the equipment and materials used.

Tell them "i will work here for free for 90 days, for free." All i want is for you to teach me and give me a chance to do whatever you feel i am capable of. If after that 90 days you are satisfied with me, you hire me on at whatever level you think is appropriate. If not, we part ways as friends and all i ask is that you introduce me to the people who can help me progress in this field."

When you get the apprenticeship, over-deliver. Be early, stay late, take notes, and move quickly and with an enthusiastic attitude. Be polite to everyone, and if ANY women show interest in you wjatsoever in or around the shop, politely tell them you are flattered but really need to stay focused on your work. (All they want is free ink from you anyways).

You'll be an apprentice, and then a journeyman in short order.

Not an expert on tattoo artistry or tattoos business, but one thing a I know is that be ready to swallow your ego and prepare to pay your dues. It takes a lot of pressure and heat to turn coal into a diamond. Godspeed to your endeavors

I'm no artist, and have no tattoos.

The best advice I can give is to practice on slabs of pork shoulder, or something similar. I wouldn't want to practice on people and fuck it up.

Tattoos are like guns. Everyone says they want to buy one, and the next thing you know they have 10. It's a culture.

Pro artist here. Was offered a few apprenticeships at top studios in a major world class city.

What I would say to you is that all that matters is your drawing ability, your sense of design and composition, and developing your own style.

If you're not sure, look up high end tattoo shops, or Instagram tattoo hashtags and follow artists whose work speaks to you. Take note of what you respond positively to and what is especially compelling. Then start to draw different subjects and make designs, drawing inspiration and pulling rendering techniques and stylistic elements from a few of your favorite artists.

Get a sketchbook and fill it up with designs. Aim for at least a page or two a day. Before long you'll develop a style and look of your own, and have a consistent body of work to show to tattoo artists you'd like to be your mentor.

If your work is good enough, one of them will see the potential and want to take you under their wing.

Also, you should know that most apprenticeships are unpaid and last month's or even years before you get to work on real customers and make money at it. It's a long road, but there's definitely a pot of gold at the end.

As impossible mentioned, you might need to volunteer to do free work and maybe even offer to rent a chair in a shop. You might operate at a loss but you'll build up experience and hopefully gain a following and clientele. I know in the tattoo world, social media and word of mouth is how you make it so be sure to make every interaction and job you do count
