Just feeling useless. Vent.

Just backstory, at 19 I lost my kidneys. Went on dialysis. Had two transplants. Got an English Degree late in life. Worked at a prison in 2018. Thanksgiving 2020, my transplant medications caused cancer. I lost my last transplant from the chemo. The chemo made the cancer grow to the size of a heart. They took it out, along with half of my colon and the transplant. I'm on dialysis. Married with three kids. I have a great, supportive wife but I just feel useless. This English degree feels useless considering I have a corrections background. My mind is not healthy. I want to work, but the skills for remote work just seems impossible because of my work history. I'm almost 40 and suppose to be at my peak, and life is really aggravating.
Just looking for some advice, fellas. If any. I'm not suicidal. Just need a vacation, or some direction.

What if you wrote about your experiences in the corrections world while you get better?

I would expand on that and make it two-fold. Start writing about his corrections career, and as he writes what will eventually all add together to be a book, use the writings to guide podcast episodes, and start podcasting and/or vlogging. The podcast/vlogging can bring earlier/faster returns, while the book or screenplay or both can bring a larger payoff at a later time.

Damn, that is a lot of hardship for one person to go through. Anyone in your situation would feel lost.

Have you looked into copy editing? You have the qualification, it can be done remote and likely part-time or full-time. Look for open positions at local regional newspapers. Large businesses also need copy editors to maintain their websites, edit newsletters and publications, and advertisements.

ETA: You could also look into the requirements to be an English lecturer at a local community college or university, I believe your degree qualifies you to teach at least the entry level English course required of all undergraduate programs (though FYI the pay will be shit)

As someone with an Engineering Degree, please don't belittle your English Degree. That's not fair to you.

I don't know if you have any desire to write, because not all people who desire an English Degree do. But if you do, someone like me outside of the small world that exists inside a prison wants to know some things that only a person like you can answer:

- What is it really like to work in prison? Not reality TV prison, but real lockup?

- What is the reality of the prisoner's lives? What is the experience truly like?

- What things did you learn there that you never expected?

- What misconceptions did you have going in that you were disabused of?

I am not the only one with those questions. Someone with that knowledge like you, with training in language like you can tell us all those answers in non-fiction or fiction form.

Just a thought. You got every right to be bummed because, damn, none what you are going through is easy.

But you did ask for direction. It might not be applicable, but thats my shot.

I am wishing the best for you, OP.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
