What's the ACLU up to these days?

You used to hear about the ACLU all the time when I was a kid, but now it doesn’t seem to come up much. But then I saw this letter to the editor in the New York Times:

Re “A.C.L.U. Pushes for Inquiry Into Bias Against Female Directors” (Arts pages, May 13):

The American Civil Liberties Union’s recent complaint makes clear what everyone in Hollywood (and many of us outside Hollywood) know: Social networks and implicit discriminatory processes privilege men over women and threaten equal opportunity for women in the film industry.

Oh, so that’s what the ACLU is up to these days: demanding that the government investigate and crack down upon freedom of expression. Well, of course …

Yes, I’ve always found the ACLU idea of “civil liberties” quite weird. Support the rights of Nazis, pedophiles, etc. to speak, but be actively hostile to free speech in the workplace and freedom of association. Somehow, in their minds, it all makes sense.

I wonder why the ACLU (of which I was a member, in my youth) chose to complain about the sexual demographics of Hollywood directors, rather than, say, the overall demographics of studio executives, producers, agents, managers, and the like?

Studios and directors are understandably going to choose to work with someone they know and have worked with before over someone they haven't.

That is what's missing from this data. Are these male-hiring male producers hiring based on gender (which would be wrong) or based on previous working relationships?

If it's the former then that's a discriminatory pattern of hiring which the studios or whoever's funding the film should forcibly stamp out. If it's the latter then the industry should be opening a dialogue with them asking how can they can encourage them to hire more women for those positions.

That sounds like a swell idea! Let's shoehorn people in the movie industry based on gender and not merit.

Better idea, let's make an "all female" movie! Let's shoot a remake, because we are sooo creative! Why not Ghostbusters?
