I'm getting married in 7 months and I'm low key getting scared. I have a needy and dependent future MIL who is trying to hold us hostage at her house and make my future wife and I support the absurd expenses of the house.
My fiance and I have come to an agreement that after the wedding we are moving back out and getting our own place. But June seems like an eternity away.
We are in a complicated balance where my MIL who, by shear dumb luck, has a retirement account that appreciated significantly. She agreed to pay for the wedding under the stipulation that we live in this house forever and pay the mortgage / property taxes / bills. My personal hell & nightmare
We moved back into this house after my fiances dad passed last year to help my MIL. The reality is that she worked him to death. He was a simple man who made a modest salary and was hard working . My MIL however had seen the lifestyles of some of her friends who either had high paying careers or married rich. She forced him to stay and bear the burden of this house which is too big and too costly for normal people.
The other issue is that this house was built by my MILs family many years ago and my MIL has never lived anywhere else her whole life. So there's emotional attachment.
And now the buck is passed to us to maintain it. And the stress is quickly mounting. I'm used to living on my own, having my own autonomy, freedom, privacy.
I hide in our room (my fiance's childhood room) most of the day to avoid running into my MIL and being given tasks to do. Every conversation ends with either me doing some kind of work or plans for me to spend money in some way. Or a combination of both.
I work from home and my fiance recently started working so there's no buffer now and it makes living here a hellish nightmare for someone like me.
Anyway, all that to say I'm terrified of getting married, then my fiance getting FOMO 1-2 years down the line and decides "I wanna be free". And my MIL aiding in seeking the most lucrative deal she can, alimony and assets.
My MIL has bragged to me before about how she helped her niece and cousin seek alimony in their divorces.
So finally my question is this,
let's say I have a certain amount in my bank account and IRA's. Let's say I'm suspecting my wife might want to divorce. What if I cashed out my bank account, literal cash, put it in a combination lock brief case and hid it in my parents home where only they know where it is.
Then let's say I move to my parents state ahead of the divorce filing and start working a cash heavy / cash only job.
Then let's say the divorce happens and they say "hey you liquidated your money, she's entitled to 25% of that, pay up". Would they even be able to see that I had a personal bank account, what the amount was, and that I emptied it?
And let's say I refuse and would rather sit in jail than pay them a dime.
Then what?
Sure they could seize my car and maybe my computer? Sell it and use that as some alimony payments but after that then what?
I know this is a wild hypothetic but I always wondered what would happen if the man simply refused to work and would rather be in jail than pay his ex to be single and fuck other dudes.
Let me know if I've watched too many movies and shows or if this is legit a situation where the state would be like "idk what to tell you, we can't get any more money from him"
Thanks
