Another inspiring moment today. I was at a festival watching some combat training (the family friendly version) being taught to kids. The participants were a mix of boys and girls (mostly 7-10 year olds). They were given padded swords, Shields and armour. The trainer then explained the rules to them and let them have at it.
Now at this point, most media would have you believe that the girls Girlbossed their way to victory. Not at all. On the contrary, the girls threw dainty half hearted swings at one another. The boys on the other hand, smashed it out of the ball park.
They dropped right into fighting stance. Their strikes were ferocious (I could hear the padded swords hit their opponents' Shields from half way across a field). One boy even ran round the field scoring hit after hit against every major opponent. It was great.
When the fight was done, we all cheered and applauded. And rightly so. I did so with full heart for the boys. It s wonderful to know that they still have a great fighting spirit in them. But we need to support them. Because in years to come, they will be taught to be ashamed of their own masculinity, that their fighting instinct is 'toxic', that their survival skills are 'mansplaining' and other total BS.
Boys learned to fight like men for centuries. And their fighting instinct has allowed them to serve society with honour: from the Samurai to the Knights Templar to name but a few.
Boys can fight, and we should support them to become honourable fighting men.
